Development on the Knight Rider movie has moved up a gear with the news that The Weinstein Company has appointed screenwriter Brad Copeland to pen a draft of the script for the classic 80s TV series, which starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a former Green Beret and LAPD Officer who fights crime with his artificially intelligent Pontiac Firebird Trans Am called KITT.
Copeland's previous writing credits include the TV shows Arrested Development, My Name Is Earl and the U.S. version of The Inbetweeners, as well as the feature films Wild Hogs and Yogi Bear. He also made his directorial debut last year with the indie comedy Coffee Town, which is due for release in the States next month.
According to the Los Angeles Times, TWC envisions the Knight Rider movie as "a somewhat higher-budget, more action orientated movie than the Weinstein's typical prestige fare" and is hoping to replicate the success of the blockbuster Fast & Furious franchise.
