UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 14th to Sunday 16th June 2013...

This will come as little surprise to anyone, but Zack Snder's eagerly-anticipated Superman reboot Man of Steel has topped the UK box office chart in its opening weekend, pulling in £11,198,786 over the Friday-Sunday period for the second biggest debut of the year to date behind Marvel's Iron Man 3 (£13.71 million, including two days of previews).

It is of course a franchise high for the Last Son of Krypton, with 2006's Superman Returns opening with £4.34 million on its way to a disappointing total of just £16.4 million. It's also a record for Zack Snyder on these shores (his previous best opening was 300, which pulled in £4.75 million in 2007), while it also edges out The Dark Knight (£11.19 million, including previews) and gives Warner Bros. its second-best UK debut for a DC Comics property after last year's The Dark Knight Rises, which pulled in £14.36 million.

The arrival of Man of Steel pretty much sucked the life out of the rest of teh chart, although Steven Soderbergh's Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra continues to impress, climbing three places in its second week as the film expanded its screens in an effort to capitalise on last week's limited opening. However, there was no room in the top ten for any other new releases, with romance Stuck in Love, comedy Admission, and Joss Whedon's Much Ado About Nothing all failing to make an impact in the chart.
