UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 7th to Sunday 9th June 2013...
Well, it seems that Sony made a smart move leaving M. Night Shyamalan's name off the promotional material for After Earth, with the Will Smith / Jaden Smith sci-fi managing to shake off negative reviews to top the UK box office with an opening weekend of £2,249,532.
While this is far less than the debut hauls recorded by the year's big hitters, it was enough to comfortably take first place this week, and more than double that of its nearest rival The Hangover Part III, which slipped to second in its third weekend with £1.1 million, making it the only other film to reach the seven figure mark.
Heading towards the bottom of the chart and three other newcomers managed to crack the top ten this past weekend; Steven Soderbergh's Behind the Candelabra opened in eighth place with £513,288, Shane Meadows' documentary The Stone Roses: Made of Stone followed in ninth with £367,319 (including two days of previews) and Ariel Vromen's The Iceman propped up the chart in tenth with £201,789.
