An impressive first trailer for Ang Lee's Life of Pi

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ang Lee seems to have slipped under the radar a little since grabbing the Oscar for Best Director for 2005's Brokeback Mountain, with the steamy thriller Lust, Caution (2007) too explicit to enjoy mainstream success, and his last film - the 2009 comedy Taking Woodstock - proving a turn-off for audiences and critics. However, Lee will be hoping to get back on track with his next offering Life of Pi - a sweeping 3D adventure based on author Yann Martel's Booker Prize-winning 2001 novel - and if this first trailer is any indication, he could be set to make another splash come awards season.

Adapted by screenwriter David Magee (Finding Neverland), Life of Pi sees newcomer Suraj Sharma as Pi Patel, a young Indian who survives the sinking of a freighter and survives 227 days stranded on a lifeboat in the Pacific with a Bengal tiger called Richard Parker. Along with Sharma, the film also features Tabu (The Namesake), Irrfan Khan (The Amazing Spider-Man), Gerard Depardieu (Potiche) and Tobey Maguire (The Great Gatsby) as Yann Martel. Take a look at the trailer, which was released by Fox earlier today...

Life of Pi is set for release in North America on November 21st, and arrives in the UK on December 21st.
