Walt Disney Pictures has tapped Norwegian filmmakers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg to direct the fifth instalment in the blockbuster fantasy series Pirates of the Caribbean, which will see Johnny Depp returning once more to the role of Captain Jack Sparrow.
Rønning and Sandberg are no strangers to the high seas, having directed the Academy Award-nominated Kon-Tiki, which tells the true story of explorer Thor Heyerdal and his astonishing 4,300 mile crossing of the Pacific on a balsa wood raft in 1947. The duo will succeed both Rob Marshall and Gore Verbinski in the director's chair(s) for Pirates of the Caribbean 5 having fought off competition from the likes of Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) and Fredrik Bond (The Neccessary Death of Charlie Countryman).
Pirates of the Caribbean 5 has been written by Jeff Nathanson (whose previous sequel credits include Speed 2: Cruise Control, Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) and is expected to go into production in January ahead of a release on July 10th, 2015.
