Planes started out as a direct-to-DVD release but, much like how Pixar's John Lasseter once rescued Toy Story 2 from that fate, it will be getting a full theatrical release. You can see the latest trailer below.
The film takes place in the same cinematic universe as Cars, this time following their airborne cousins. It follows the aptly named Dusty (he's a cropdusting aeroplane) who must overcome his fear of heights to compete in a famous aerial race. A good ol' underdog story, as one of the trailer's characters says.
Planes is directed by Klay Hall and written by Jeffrey M. Howard, with the voice talents of Val Kilmer (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Seinfeld), Teri Hatcher (Desperate Housewives), John Cleese (A Fish Called Wanda), Dane Cook (Dan In Real Life), Brad Garrett (Finding Nemo)and Cedric the Entertainer (Ice Age).

Planes is set to open on August 16th in the UK and August 9th in the US.
