UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 5th - Sunday 7th October 2012...
Despite mixed reviews, the Olivier Megaton-directed action sequel Taken 2 topped the UK box office chart with an impressive £7,378,048 opening weekend, including £1.19m from Thursday previews. In terms of Friday-Sunday openings, Taken 2 enjoyed the fifth highest of the year behind The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man and Prometheus, with Liam Neeson's second outing as retired CIA agent Bryan Mills having already banked more than £6.39m grossed by the 2008 original during its entire run on these shores.
As a result of Taken 2's blockbuster opening, last week's top film Looper slips down into second, adding another £1.52m for a solid two-week haul of £5.41m, while the newly-released horror Sinister takes third with a decent £1,435,722, followed by another newcomer, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which grossed £827,983 in fourth position. Spooky CG animation ParaNorman slips three places to fifth ahead of political comedy The Campaign (down two to sixth), with Disney-Pixar's Brave climbing two places to finish up in seventh after ten weeks on screens. Showing considerably less staying power is Resident Evil: Retribution, which plunges five places to eighth in its second weekend, while awards hopeful Untouchable climbs one spot to ninth and Hope Springs rounds out the chart in tenth, down three positions from last weekend.
