Elijah Wood has a Maniac passion for scalps

Gollum did warn us that Frodo was a “bad Hobbit” though one doubts that he would have imagined the actor portraying him becoming a serial killer who has a particular fetish for scalps in the upcoming Maniac.  The role of Frank is far removed from the world of Middle-earth for Elijah Wood who stars in the modern-day Jack the Ripper tale where a mannequin store owner gives in to his compulsion to stalk and kill upon developing an obsessive friendship with a young artist named Anna.

“To tell a story entirely from the killer’s perspective is an exciting idea,” stated Elijah Wood (Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind) in a press release for the re-boot of the 1980 cult horror film.  “I was fascinated by the fact that I’d only be seen in fragments. Once I read the script, I was taken by it, and it’s funny because usually I don’t like the idea of remakes, particularly in genre movies where there are so many classics that are remade in an upsetting fashion. But the style of this film was so different from the original that I was confident we were not just remaking what had already been done.”

Nora Arnezeder (Safe House) who plays Anna noted, “It’s definitely a genre movie with a love story in it. It’s a psychological movie – you’re inside the mind of the protagonist and you find out about his past with his mom, what he has gone through with her, how much he craved his mother’s love and attention which he never got, why he’s become this horrible killer and why he falls in love with Anna. What’s interesting is that there’s so much tension in the script because you can feel that Frank loves her and you don’t know if Frank is going to kill her. Those two characters are never judgemental about each other and they can be themselves when they’re together. This is also what attracts Frank to her – she’s not trying to seduce him, she fights for her art and mostly she takes the time she needs to discover his soul.”

IFC Midnight will release Maniac which is directed by Franck Khalfoun (P2) theatrically @ The IFC Center and on VOD June 21, 2013.
