UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 17th - Sunday 19th May 2013...

It seems that UK audiences can't get enough of the Fast & Furious series. The sixth instalment amassed a hefty £8,717,534 to claim first place in the box office chart this past weekend, delivering a franchise high opening, as well as giving Universal its biggest ever three-day debut on these shores.

Despite being destroyed by Vin Diesel and company, Baz Luhrmann's lavish adaptation of The Great Gatsby pulled in a respectable £4,095,325 in second, with £676k of Thursday previews giving it enough to knock last week's number one film Star Trek Into Darkness down into third.

Thanks to the arrival of Fast & Furious 6 and The Great Gatsby, much of the rest of the top ten were left fighting for scraps, with Iron Man 3 the only other film to break seven figures in fourth; in fact, the Marvel sequel was the only other film to manage more than £200,000. Still, cinemas will be more than happy with the cumulative returns, with the box office up almost 50% on the equivalent weekend from last year.

Incoming...

Today sees the release of 20th Century Fox's CG-animated fantasy adventure Epic (cert. U) [read our review here], which should secure top spot, given that it's already had two days of preview screenings last weekend to further boost its opening haul. The Hangover Part III (cert. 15) will be hoping Thursday previews will provide enough of a boost to put up an outside challenge (assuming audiences aren't still suffering a Hangover from Part II), while Friday sees a special 25th anniversary re-release of the Studio Ghibli classics My Neighbour Totoro (cert. U) and Grave of the Fireflies (cert. 12A), while other new arrivals include Something In the Air (cert. 15) [read our review here] and The Moth Diaries (cert. 15).
