Thank Flickering Myth it's Friday...
Hell of a stag do.
Holy Motors

There's something rather Cosmopolis about the trailer for Leos Carax's Holy Motors. Maybe it's a limo thing, what it represents and conveys; decadence, sterility, too much space, that weird-shaped-mouth guy from the Aphex Twin video.

A few of those themes seem to permeate Holy Motors. The narrative, for what it matters, follows Oscar (Denis Levant), an anti-hero who keeps changing his appearance on the instruction of his limo driver. He may or may not be the subject of a reality show.

It's a French film, and Carax's first feature in 13 years. It's challenging cinema, and, although it might not be an enjoyable experience, you'll be better for watching it.

Holy Motors is out now.

Looper

Brick was one of the most assured debut films of the last decade, and Looper reunites its 3rd Rock From the Sun come Inception star Joseph Gordon-Levitt with director Rian Johnson.

It's a time-travel gangster film, where Gordon-Levitt plays a 'Looper' - a profession in which marked men from the future are sent back to our present to get whacked. It all gets a bit awkward, though, when Gordon-Levitt has to kill his future self, Bruce Willis.

There's some prosthetic work going on to make the two more akin, but you'd hope that doesn't affect Gordon-Levitt's subtleties. He has a wonderful way of communicating much with very little.

The high-concept science fiction narrative and ambitious director calls to mind Duncan Jones' Source Code from last year. Expect there's more people pointing guns in the production stills for this one.

The Campaign

"I refuse to lose, and I will win." Cam Brady is classic Will Ferrell. A character full of confidence, despite being an absolute idiot. He's running unopposed for congress. To make a good comedy, you'd have him face a dastardly, but more intelligent antagonist. To make a great comedy, you'd have him up against someone even dumber.

Zach Galifianakis is that man. He plays Marty Huggins, and Marty Huggins decides to challenge Brady. Ferrell vs Galifianakis. They're two of the funniest men working in American cinema today.

The Campaign is out now.

Enjoy the philms.
