Having wowed international audiences with homegrown efforts such as Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Lady Vengeance and Thirst, South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook makes his English language debut next year with Stoker, which has just received its first trailer today.
Scripted by Prison Break star Wentworth Miller, Stoker tells the story of a girl (Mia Wasikowska) who finds herself drawn towards her mysterious and enigmatic uncle (Matthew Goode) after he moves in with her and her emotionally fragile mother (Nicole Kidman) after the death of her father. If that sounds a bit familiar, it's because Stoker is inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt - even going so far as to use the name Uncle Charlie for Goode's character - but fear not, for Miller has promised to "take it in a very, very different direction", and with Park on board, you can pretty much guarantee that's going to happen.
Take a look at the official synopsis, and check out the trailer below:
“India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska) was not prepared to lose her father and best friend Richard (Dermot Mulroney) in a tragic auto accident. The solitude of her woodsy family estate, the peace of her tranquil town, and the unspoken somberness of her home life are suddenly upended by not only this mysterious accident, but by the sudden arrival of her Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode), whom she never knew existed. When Charlie moves in with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evie (Nicole Kidman), India thinks the void left by her father’s death is finally being filled by his closet bloodline. Soon after his arrival, India comes to suspect that this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives. Yet instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless young woman becomes increasingly infatuated with him.”
Stoker is set for release on March 1st, 2013.
