Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Lawless) is in early talks to star in the movie Everest for Sony Pictures, which will be directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith). An adaptation of Jeffrey Archer's historical novel 'Paths of Glory', the story focuses on the mystery surrounding George Mallory's ascent of Mount Everest in 1924.

The climber made three attempts to become the first man to reach the summit of the world's highest mountain. Mallory and his partner Sandy Irvine were last seen making their final assault near the top. Their bodies were found in 1999, raising the question of whether they made it or died on the way.

The book has been adapted by Sheldon Turner (Up In The Air) and the film is due to begin shooting once Liman completes the sci-fi drama All You Need Is Kill with Tom Cruise. Hardy, who is in talks to play Mallory, is currently filming Mad Max: Fury Road with Charlize Theron, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Nicholas Hoult.
