Keen to capitalise on the box-office success of last year's Men in Black 3 - which pulled in a global haul of $624 million to set a franchise high - Sony has officially given the green light to a fourth instalment in the sci-fi comedy series.

Up-and-coming screenwriter Oren Uziel has been hired to pen the script for Men in Black 4, and he will also develop the draft for another of the studio's upcoming sequels, the Channing Tatum / Jonah Hill buddy cop comedy 21 Jump Street 2.

Having written the 2010 short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and co-created the subsequent web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy, Oren Uziel has since signed on to write the screenplay for Warner Bros.' proposed big screen reboot of the popular beat-em-up video game franchise, while Sony is also producing his Black List script for a sci-fi/horror comedy entitled The Kitchen Sink. He will begin work on Men in Black 4 once he finishes up with 21 Jump Street 2, which is set for release next year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter no deals are currently in place with Men in Black 3 stars Josh Brolin and Emma Thompson for the fourth movie, and it's also unclear to what extent Will Smith's Agent J will be involved with the sequel. However, expect Smith to return, along with director Barry Sonnenfeld and executive producer Steven Spielberg.
