Films to watch out for in May

May is here and much like the past four months, there continues to be more fantastic cinema releases scheduled. There’s a great variation of cinema listings in May, from comedy and animations to drama and romance. Here is our pick of ones that we’re most looking forward to:

The Great Gatsby

After what seems like months of anticipation for Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of the 1920s novel The Great Gatsby, the wait is almost over. It has been some time since we have experienced Luhrmann’s distinctive direction and cinema style on the big screen, which was Australia back in 2008 (aside from a period of shorts). The Great Gatsby tells the familiar tale of introvert Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) and his unlikely friendship with showman neighbour Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio). As Carraway learns more about Gatbsy’s mysterious history the meaning of their relationship becomes apparent. The film also includes performances from Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher and Joel Edgerton.

Released 16/05/2013

Chimpanzee

Disney’s release this month is something a bit different to the normal animation we come to expect. Chimpanzee is a documentary based upon Oscar, a baby chimpanzee who tragically becomes orphaned after an attack on his parents from an opposing group of chimpanzees. This is where the typical foundation of a Disney story unfolds – I’m sure we can expect a journey of challenges, learning and ultimately independence from young Oscar as he grows and develops. This documentary is narrated by Tim Allen.

Released 03/05/2013

21 and Over

From the writers of The Hangover movies, Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, here we have another contribution to the wave of, more often than not, average US comedy films. The plot of this film will come as no surprise to cinema goers who are familiar with the style and structure of plenty other ‘Hangover’ type features. 21 and Over revolves around medical student Jeff Chang (Justin Chon) who just so happens to turn 21 the night before his most important medical school interview. Jeff’s buddies take him out to celebrate with birthday beers where we can expect much destruction and debauchery – but will he make it to his interview on time? After a spate of similar movies, it will be interesting to see if this offers anything different.

Released 03/05/2013

I’m So Excited

I’m So Excited is Pedro Almodóvar’s new release, which follows a flight heading to Mexico City, when things take a turn for the worst and there are fears of imminent crashing. Although not sounding typically comedic, Almodóvar’s film is supposed to bring about many laughs, with a cast including Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz. This film is bound to be compared in some ways against the nostalgic 1980’s Airplane! featuring Leslie Nielsen, but with a Spanish twist!

Released 03/05/2013
