A big screen adaptation of Epic Games' hit third-person shooter Gears of War has been in development since 2007, and after slipping into development hell, last October brought rumours that talent agency CAA was looking to revive the movie. Well, now comes word that Ted and 47 Ronin producer Scott Stuber has secured the film rights and will look to develop a new script alongside developers Epic.
According to Variety, Stuber is yet to appoint a screenwriter to the adaptation, which was initially written by Stuart Beattie (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra), with Chris Morgan (Wanted) subsequently coming in to do a rewrite when director Len Wiseman (Total Recall) became attached in 2008. There's also no talent or distributor attached as of yet, although Stuber has a first-look deal with Universal and the report states that both parties will soon be shopping the project to potential studios.
Gears of War was released on the Xbox 360 back in 2006, and has since spawned three more instalments - most recently the prequel Gears of War: Judgement. The series takes place on an Earth-like planet called Sera and follows a group of soldiers battling the Locust Horde, a race of creatures who emerged from under the surface of the planet, bringing mankind to the brink of extinction.
