The Dark Knight is set to return this October with Warner Bros. announcing the release of Batman: Arkham Origins, a prequel to the hit videogames Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, with Game Informer providing us with our first look at what's sure to be one of the year's gaming highlights.
Batman: Arkham Origins will take place several years before Arkham Asylum and Arkham City and sees a young and inexperienced Batman taking on eight supervillains, who have teamed up with the goal of eliminating Gotham's Caped Crusader - and on Christmas Eve, no less. So far, only Deathstroke is confirmed (see image), but you'd have to expect to see the Clown Prince of Crime popping up too, seeing as he's been the main bad guy in both titles so far.
The third game in the acclaimed series will see Warner Bros. Games Montreal taking over the reigns from Rocksteady Studios, although WB has full access to Rocksteady's custom Unreal engine, which should ensure a smooth transition between the two developers. Eric Holmes (The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Prototype) will serve as the game's lead developer. Check out Game Informer's announcement trailer here:
Batman: Arkham Origins is scheduled for release on Wii U, Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on October 25th, while the 3DS and PS Vita will receive the spin-off title Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - a "2.5D exploration action game" from Armature Studio (Metroid Prime).
Update - Game Informer has now dropped a few screenshots for both games, which confirms that Deathstroke will be joined in the roster of villains by Black Mask and Penguin:
