Here are words I never thought I would utter in my lifetime: The number one film in North America is The Evil Dead. Let that sink in for a moment. The remake of one of horror's most beloved cult series opened up in the top spot with $26 million. That is nothing short of mind blowing for a film series that has spent three decades being a cult favorite among fans. Now it seems Evil Dead has crawled out of the cult basement and into the mainstream.

The Croods was in second place lapping up that sweet, sweet family money with $21 million in its third week. Dreamworks has been a little nervous since Rise of the Guardians underperformed spectacularly. While The Croods won't do enough to offset that loss, the film won't be another financial disappointment either.
G.I. Joe: Retaliation had an average week over week hold and brought in another $20 million in its second week. Like most big budget studio franchises, Joe is going to make the bulk of its money internationally. All it requires of North America is a decent performance. At this point the second G.I. Joe film is a lock for $100 million or more. What should be worth noting is that the second film looks to make less than the first which brought in $150 million, so for all the talk about trimming the fat and making a better movie, the film will make less than the first in the U.S.
Jurassic Park 3D took in $18 million which was good enough for fourth place. The Steven Spielberg classic had a decent debut, falling in line with a few of the recent 3D re-releases like Titanic and The Phantom Menace.
Next week brings audiences a little inspiration and a little desperation. Inspiration in the form of the Jackie Robinson biopic 42, and desperation in the form of a fifth, and hopefully final Scary Movie. See you next week.
