UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 7th to Sunday 9th September 2012...
DNA Films' ambitious British comic book adaptation Dredd 3D topped the UK box office on its opening weekend, with the Karl Urban-headlined actioner banking a debut haul of £1,049,345 to become the first 18 certificate film to take first place in the chart since Saw 3D back in October 2010. It was also enough to fend off competition from fellow newcomers Lawless and Anna Karenina, with the prohibition-era gangster tale pulling in £973,234 in second place and the latest Joe Wright / Keira Knightley period piece following in third with £875,702.
Moving on down the chart and last week's number one Total Recall slips three places to fourth with a second-weekend take of £675k, while Disney-Pixar's Brave drops two places to fifth and adds another £649k for a six-week total of £19.3m. Horror The Possession falls one spot to sixth, followed by Seth MacFarlane's Ted (down three) and The Dark Knight Rises (down two) in seventh and eighth respectively. The biggest fall of the week is reserved for The Watch, which plummets from second down to ninth in its second weekend, while action sequel The Bourne Legacy slips three positions and looks about ready for the count in tenth.
