When Matthew Vaughn walked away from the upcoming X-Men: First Class sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past, many people thought he was being lined up to direct Disney's Star Wars: Episode VII. However, with that task falling to Star Trek Into Darkness helmer J.J. Abrams, Vaughn has instead opted for another comic book adaptation with Deadline reporting that he's set to reunite with Mark Millar (Kick-Ass) to bring Millar and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) The Secret Service to the screen for 20th Century Fox.
According to Deadline, Vaughn and his regular writing partner Jane Goldman (Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) have recently completed the screenplay for The Secret Service and he will finance and produce the adaptation through his Marv Films production company. It is said to closely follow the plot of the comic book series, and 20th Century Fox have set a November 14th, 2014 release date for the film, which puts it in competition with Christopher Nolan's sci-fi Interstellar (out November 7th, 2014) and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (out November 21st, 2014). Here's the official synopsis for the comic book:
"From the writer of Kick-Ass and the artist of Watchmen comes a collaboration decades in the making! The world's greatest secret agent is on the most exciting case of his career. But will the end of the world as know it take a back seat to training his street-punk nephew to be the next James Bond? meanwhile, what's the secret link between a series of kidnapped sci-fi stars, the murder of an entire town, and a dark secret from inside Mount Everest? Under Uncle Jack's supervision, Gary's spy skills and confidence blossom--but when the duo learn what's behind the celebrity kidnappings, the knowledge comes at a price. The conspiracy begins to unravel, but who can be trusted when so many prominent figures seem to be involved? It's a must-be-seen-to-be-believed action spectacle!"
In addition to The Secret Service, Vaughn has several producing commitments on comic book adaptations over the next couple of years, including the sequels Kick-Ass 2 and X-Men: Days of Future Past, as well as Josh Trank's reboot The Fantastic Four.
