UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 22nd - Sunday 24th March 2013...

The UK box office chart received a shake up this past weekend with four new releases cracking the top ten. The best of the bunch was DreamWorks Animation's caveman comedy The Croods, which took first place with an impressive £5,372,290, although this was bolstered by £1.85 million in preview takings from the previous weekend. Meanwhile, there was no pot of gold for Jack the Giant Slayer, with Bryan Singer's $200 million-budgeted fairytale adventure pulling in a John Carter-esque £1,591,736 in second, while comedy Identity Thief debuted with £1,313,162 to claim fourth behind Disney's Oz the Great and Powerful.
Shifting on down the chart and Steven Soderbergh's Side Effects slipped three places to fifth, while Disney's CG animation Wreck-It Ralph dropped two to sixth. Nicolas Cage's latest should-have-been-straight-to-video effort Stolen managed to claim seventh place with an opening weekend of £202,373, while British crime epic Welcome to the Punch, Jason Statham thriller Parkerand horror flick Mamarounded out the rest of the chart, occupying positions eight through ten. And finally, outside of the top ten Les Miserables became the first film of 2013 to crack £40 million at the box office, having banked £40.12 million since its release eleven weekends back.

Also out tomorrow is Danny Boyle's latest, the psychological thriller Trance (cert. 15) starring James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson, while Friday brings us Andrew Niccol's adaptation of Twilight author Stephenie Meyer's The Host (cert. 12A), a 3D reissue of the Pixar classic Finding Nemo (cert.
