HBO pulls the plug on Enlightened

After two low-rated seasons, HBO has decided to not pick up Enlightened for a third season. The show was created by Mike White (School of Rock) and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park), who also starred as the lead in the show. White, Dianne Ladd, Luke Wilson, Timm Sharp and Sarah Burns made up the rest of the ensemble cast.

Season 2 averaged a very low 222,000 viewers per episode and could only manage a 0.1 averagein the  18-49 demographic. That was up from its first season but nowhere near the 660,000 viewers fellow HBO show Girls was attracting. Dern won a Golden Globe for Best in a Comedy Series for the first season but that didn’t seem to impress anyone enough to boost the ratings.

"It was a very difficult decision," HBO said in a statement about the cancellation. "We're proud of the show and we look forward to working with Mike White and Laura Dern in the future." Enlightened follows recent canceled shows from HBO such as Hung, Luck, How to Make It in America and Bored to Death.
