With its latest comic book-inspired adaptation Arrow building a positive buzz ahead of its premiere next month, The CW has now turned its attention to another DC Comics character, with Vulture reporting that the network has started development on a small screen adaptation of Wonder Woman alongside DC and Warner Bros. Television.

Entitled Amazon, the proposed series will adopt the Smallville approach as it explores the formative years of Princess Diana of Themyscira and “will focus on Wonder Woman as a young, budding superhero, rather than a fully formed defender of liberty.” According to the report, Allan Heinberg (Grey’s Anatomy) has been hired to pen a script, although the pilot is yet to officially receive the green light.

Just last year a Wonder Woman series made it to the pilot stage at NBC under producer David E. Kelly (Ally McBeal), with Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) starring in the lead role as the Amazon Princess. The character does of course have a rich TV history, with Lynda Carter donning the knee-high boots between 1975 and 1979. Meanwhile Warner Bros. have been actively trying to develop a feature film for over a decade; filmmaker Joss Whedon (The Avengers) was attached between 2005 and 2008, while earlier this year it was announced that Michael Goldenberg (Green Lantern) has become the latest name to try his hand at a screenplay.

Should Arrow prove a ratings hit for The CW, then it looks likely that Wonder Woman will follow suit. So, who would you like to see cast as the Amazon Princess?
