Universal Pictures has tapped up-and-coming director Colin Trevorrow to helm the next instalment in the blockbuster dino-franchise Jurassic Park. Trevorrow made his feature directorial debut last year with the acclaimed low-budget time-traveling comedy drama Safety Not Guaranteed, which led to rumours that he was being eyed by Disney as a possible candidate to director Star Wars: Episode VII before J.J. Abrams' was appointed.

According to Deadline, Trevorrow - who is also currently working on a remake of the 80s sci-fi adventure Flight of the Navigator - "met with the studio and filmmakers, and they felt he was a good match for the material, having grown up a huge fan of the trilogy and part of a new generation of directors steeped in all things dinosaur. They felt he would preserve and protect the characters in the story they created."

Jurassic Park IV has been penned by Rise of the Planet of the Apes screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and is being produced by Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, with Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer. The sequel is currently slated for release on June 13th, 2014.
