The Producers behind The Incredible Burt Wondertone (out March 15th), Chris Bender, J.S. Spink and Jake Weiner are working with Ahmet (son of Frank) Zappa and Monsterfoot Productions to work on Monster X– a project some are calling, ‘The Avengers of horror’.
The script, the first draft of which was written by Zappa, sees classic monsters such as Dracula, Mr Hyde, Frankenstein’s Monster and others (ten in total – hence the X in the title) team up to defend humanity against a threat more evil than them. The plan now, according to the Hollywood Reporter, is to develop the script further before shopping the idea round.
This comes off the back of the news last January that Showtime were putting together their own monster TV show featuring Frankenstein’s Monster named Penny Dreadful, which was a project from Skyfall's Sam Mendes and John Logan. But rather than have The Monster team-up with other fearsome friends, the show would see cameos from the likes of Van Helsing and Dorain Gray.
In the meantime, Zappa is also developing Monster Witness Relocation Program and The Monstrous Memoirs of a Might McFearless for Disney. It seems as though Mr Zappa has monsters on the mind…
Bender, Spink and Weiner’s The Incredible Burt Wonderstone is released in the UK this Friday. Our review will be up in the next couple of days.
Could Monster X be a new version of The Monster Squad?..
