Ozzy Armstrong discusses the first trailer for the upcoming John Milius documentary...

"He doesn’t write for pussies and he doesn’t write for women."

Much has been said about John Milius during his life and it seems that he can still generate an excellent quote and a little controversy even now.

Milius was almost immediately successful in his film career after he managed to sell a number of scripts in just a few years including Jeremiah Johnson and an uncredited role in the writing of Dirty Harry. After several years and with several big name pictures under his belt, Milius wrote the script for Apocalypse Now. This of course went on to become one of the most commercially and critically acclaimed films of all time whilst hinting at his political leanings of which he is now famed.

The trailer itself features clips of his more successful work as well as talking head segments with some of the biggest names in Hollywood including Steven Spielberg, Arnold Schwarzenegger and George Lucas.

The promise of this trailer is great as everyone seems to have their own John Milius story to tell but unfortunately for us, the trailer doesn’t delve into his deeper and sometimes darker side. Tales such as how Milius once pulled a gun on a film executive and details of his political leanings are noticeably absent. Regrettably this could mean that the directors have left out the hard-hitting information which would reduce this this documentary to a mere fluff piece. On the other hand they could just want to get you excited before they unleash the madness of Milius upon you.

But, as a documentary trailer goes, it certainly leaves you wanting to find out more about the man who is quoted as being “the teddy bear with an AK47”.

Milius is directed by Joey Figueroa and Zak Knutson and also features contributions from the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, Harrison Ford, Michael Mann, Robert Zemeckis, Oliver Stone, Bryan Singer, Charlie Sheen. It is set to premiere at SXSW tomorrow, March 9th.
