Earlier this month it was announced that Joss Whedon had signed a deal with Marvel to write and direct The Avengers 2, as well as helping to develop a new live-action TV show on behalf of Marvel Television and ABC, and now Deadline has revealed that ABC has ordered a pilot of the proposed series, which is to be entitled S.H.I.E.L.D., and will of course centre around the exploits of the Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division.

Following the announcement, Whedon also spoke briefly about his plans for S.H.I.E.L.D., with Variety quoting the filmmaker as stating that “the storyline for the proposed series will be largely ‘autonomous’ from the Avengers sequel feature… [and] will revolve around the activities of the top secret S.H.I.E.L.D. espionage organisation featured in The Avengers.”

S.H.I.E.L.D. will be written by Whedon alongside with his Dollhouse collaborators, brother Jed Whedon and sister-in-law Maurissa Tanchaeoen, with The Avengers director also helming the pilot episode, schedule permitting. Production on the pilot is expected to get underway immediately, so expect to hear plenty of juicy rumours about whether the likes of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury or Cobie Smulders’ Agent Maria Hill will be joining Whedon in making the jump to the small screen.

Are you excited for a S.H.I.E.L.D. series, and what characters would you like to see making an appearance?
