A new biographical film about Bruce Lee is apparently in the works entitled Birth of the Dragon, detailing his 'origin'. The film will focus on the now legendary fight between Lee and Wong Jack Man, which came about due to Man's displeasure with Lee teaching non-Asians Kung Fu. The fight is legendary as Lee won, yet was displeased with the fact that it took him more than 3 minutes to finish the fight and led to his development of Jeet Kune Do.
Reportedly Christopher Wilkinson and Stephen Rivele have come aboard the project, the duo are known for their work on 1995's Nixon and 2001's Ali, as well as the upcoming Freddie Mercury biopic Mercury. The film will also be produced by the pair, along with QED's Bill Block and Groundswell CEO Michael London. Block is quoted as saying:
"We're excited to retell the fantastic origin story of the world's most famous martial arts icon, which in the hands of Christopher and Stephen, lends itself to an action thriller we're sure will enthrall movie fans around the world."
The phrase "lends itself to an action thriller" along with this being an 'origin story' doesn't exactly fill me with much confidence. I'm always wary of how new films and documentaries will portray Bruce - or use him to their advantage to promote themselves (here's looking at you 'How Bruce Lee Changed The World') - and you may remember the last Hollywood Lee biopic Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, which was more fiction that fact, not to mention racist in its Asian stereotyping. So I remain very cautious, especially since Block also mentioned that Lee and Man would "team up" to fight Chinese triads - which is definitely not fact.
As yet, no potential release date for Birth of the Dragon has been given.
