UK box office top ten and analysis for the weekend of Friday 17th to Sunday 19th August 2012...

Having opened in Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland earlier this month, Disney-Pixar's Brave expanded across the rest of the UK last Monday, with its subsequent haul of £5,269,402 enough to give the CG-animated film first place at the UK box office, with another Monday release - The Bourne Legacy - following close behind in second with £4,620,289. In terms of Friday to Sunday takings, Brave amassed £2.6m, while the Jeremy Renner-headlined Bourne Legacy pulled in a franchise low of £2.1m; meanwhile the epic action ensemble The Expendables 2 opened on Friday and banked £1,985,082, which was only enough to take fourth place behind last week's number one film, the hit Seth MacFarlane comedy Ted.

Moving on further down the chart and The Dark Knight Rises slipped three places to fifth, adding another £1.5m to leave the film just shy of £50m after five weeks in play and pushing its total gross beyond The Dark Knight's £49m to make it the highest grossing Batman film on these shores. In sixth place is the Bollywood action thriller Ek Tha Tiger, which opened with a solid £543,073, followed by family offerings Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days and Ice Age: Continental Drift in seventh and eighth respectively. Elsewhere, dance sequel Step Up 4: Miami Heat cooled considerably in its second week, falling six places to ninth, while British found footage comedy The Wedding Video opens in tenth with £333,079.
