How to fix the Amazing Spider-Man franchise

Anthony Stokes on how Sony could fix The Amazing Spider-Man franchise as we build to The Sinister Six….

EThe Amazing Spider-Man 2very year there’s a movie that divides critics and audiences right down the middle, and this year it’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. This is the definition of a movie where you either leave your brain at the door and just go in and have fun, or keep your brain in and deconstruct the entire movie. I tried to have fun with it and and did enjoy a lot of the movie, but ultimately came down pretty hard on it. I’ve already wrote a feature on what The Amazing Spider-Man 2 got right and what it got wrong [see here]; building on that, I’d like to address some of the issues with The Amazing Spider-Man 2, how they could have been amended, and what Sony should do moving forward. I’ll also comment on the supposed Sinister Six line up. Spoilers to follow…

First, let me reiterate what I thought The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did pretty well. Aside from Rhino, the villains before they become villainous are very entertaining and developed pretty well given the amount of time they’re on screen. Apart from Spider-Man joking around with Rhino while he runs into two civilian vehicles, no doubt killing both sets of drivers and passengers instantly, the Spider-Man here is probably the best the character has been. This is coming from somebody who loves the original Sam Raimi trilogy – they really captured a Spider-Man who’s having fun and messes with the bad guys. All the performances, once again besides Paul Giamatti as Rhino, were damn good. It’s overall a more entertaining movie then the first one.

The biggest problem with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is that instead of the writers coming up with the best possible story it’s pretty evident they had a check list of things they had to do to set up a Sinister Six movie. This movie has absolutely no plot at all and it feels like the epilogue and prologue were there just to include The Rhino. What we get is a jumbled mess of several subplots that don’t have any through line to keep them together. Nothing really flows. It’s four completely different movies crammed together. Here’s how I feel they could have improved the story…

The-Amazing-Spider-Man-2-Gwen-Stacy-in-PerilFirst of all, completely remove Rhino. He serves no purpose on a storytelling level and completely ruins the tone of the movie. Next save Gwen Stacy’s death for the third film and take out the Green Goblin. There’s no reason to kill Gwen in this movie. They completely breeze over her death in five minutes of screen time as Spider-Man retires just to come back again. If they absolutely had to kill off Gwen, then they should’ve cut out the part where he comes back and ended the movie there and then, letting this plot breathe instead of hastily wrapping it up and making these past two movies completely pointless.

Norman Osborn is only in the movie for five minutes. Wrong move. The entire movie should’ve focused on three things: Oscorp; Gwen and Peter; and Harry and Norman. Harry should’ve been begging for Spider-Man’s blood to save his father and then when Norman dies and Harry starts to get sick himself you could’ve started the third film with Gwen dying and dealt with these storylines for an entire movie. This gives Harry more motivation and better development, since he’s only Green Goblin here just long enough to kill Gwen Stacy. They also should’ve focused more on Oscorp, which seems to be the backbone to this entire universe much like S.H.I.E.L.D. during Phase I of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Electro could’ve been a great villain but unfortunately he suffers just like everything else in this movie and doesn’t have enough screen time. He’s barely in the movie.

amazingspiderman2_finaltrailer_blog2Moving forward, I doubt Sony will take a hint and fix the issues. The main and only problem in these movies seems to be studio interference. The entire past two movies have all been set up. To use Captain America as an example, the first movie works as a set-up but it’s primarily a good origin story for Captain America. The sequel sets up Avengers: Age of Ultron but also builds beautifully – hell masterfully – on the set-up from Captain America in a manner not unlike The Dark Knight or even The Empire Strikes Back. But The Amazing Spider-Man was all set up for Gwen’s death and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was too crammed to really build on anything from it, much more like Iron Man 2 was. Do two villains at a time for now. Three clearly hasn’t worked on both occasions that they’ve tried it and I doubt it ever will. Sony needs to step back and let Marc Webb come up with a good story and then if there’s room add some fan service and set-up, instead of doing things the other way around.

And finally, to the Sinister Six line up. First off, Electro is infinitely more interesting than Rhino and belongs in the Sinister Six and the fact that he seems to be absent baffles me. Max Dillon was the highlight of the movie for me and his scenes with Harry are the only reason I’m looking forward to The Sinister Six. The line up works for me, except for really Kraven and possibly Chameleon. Kraven seems to be a really dated villain to me. Big Game Hunters aren’t relevant any more and his motivation from the comics was always just “Spider-Man is the biggest predator, so I must take him down.” And Chameleon is a boring pick because he’s basically Mysterio without the mind games. Mysterio has potential to be this series’ Joker, a character who can test Peter mentally, and I hope they do the character justice.

Overall I’m concerned that this franchise will forever suffer and continue to get worse until they bring out The Sinister Six. I have no interest in any other Spider-Man movies since Sony seems to take the “bigger is better” approach with their movies. Also, Avi Arad rubs me the wrong way and just comes off as jealous that his A-list character is losing to Captain America. Can’t stand that guy. The Sinister Six will be great, no doubt, but the ride there will could be long and monotonous.

edge of tomorrow international posterWith just under three weeks to go until its release, Warner Bros. has given us another look at Doug Liman’s (The Bourne Identity) upcoming sci-fi actioner Edge of Tomorrow, with two new TV spots arriving online by way of CBM. Check them ut after the official synopsis….

The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world’s armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Tom Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped—untrained and ill-equipped—into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop—dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over.

But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), who has lain waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth.

Edge of Tomorrow is set for release on May 30th in the UK and June 6th in the States, with a cast that also includes Bill Paxton (Aliens), Jonas Armstrong (Robin Hood), Tony Way (Game of Thrones), Kick Gurry (Tangle), Franz Drameh (Attack the Block), Dragomir Mrsic (Snabba Cash II), and Charlotte Riley (World Without End). Star Wars Rebels will feature Original Trilogy characters

A few days back some merchandising material for Star Wars Rebels suggested that we’d be seeing Obi-Wan Ben Kenobi as a character in the upcoming in-canon animated series, which was followed by rumours that Billy Dee Williams has also done some voice work as Lando Calrissian. Well, we now we have confirmation from Rebels co-creator Simon Kinberg that the show will feature some familiar faces from the Original Trilogy, with the executive producer sharing his thoughts about writing such iconic characters with Collider

“Writing dialogue for any of the legacy characters is as big a thrill as anything I’ve ever had in my life. I said this to [producer Kathleen Kennedy] that when I open up a Final Draft document, and I tab over to “Character” and it’s a character from the original films—to be nameless until people see them—but if it’s a character from the original films, just typing in those letters and then that being the recorded name in that name database for that script is as surreal, and perhaps more so, than anything I’ve experienced in my career.”

Looking beyond Obi-Wan, you’d have to imagine Mon Mothma, General Dodonna, Captain Antilles and even Princess Leia, C-3PO and R2-D2 are pretty much dead certs to appear at some point in the series. How about Wedge Antilles? Admiral Ackbar? Biggs Darklighter? Which Original Trilogy characters would you like to see making an appearance in Rebels?

Star Wars Rebels is set to get underway in the Fall, with a voice cast that includes Vanessa Marshall (Justice League), David Oyelowo (Lee Daniels’ The Butler), Freddie Prinze Jr. (Scooby-Doo), Taylor Gray (Bucket and Skinner’s Epic Adventures), Tiya Sircar (Vampire Diaries), and Steve Blum (The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes).

The Week in Spandex – X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Fantastic Four, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, The Flash, Gotham, Constantine, Nemesis and more

Our weekly round up of the latest stories from the world of screen superheroes, including X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, The Fantastic Four, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, The Sinister Six, Justice League, Arrow, The Flash, Constantine, Gotham, Son of Batman, Batman: Assault on Arkham, Nemesis, Daredevil and more…

xmen-18We’re at the halfway mark of the year when it comes to the big superhero movie releases, and next up it’s 20th Century Fox’s turn with Bryan Singer’s hotly-anticipated time-travelling mutant epic X-Men: Days of Future Past, which is tracking a whopping $125 million domestic opening – a feat that would put it some $30 million ahead of both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. And Fox is certainly going all out with it’s promotion for the film, flooding the internet with promotional material this week including 23 pieces of character art [see here], a (near) full cast banner [see here], a new image of Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Beast (Nicholas Hoult) getting up close and personal [see here], a Quicksilver (Evan Peters) character featurette [see here], the Amazing Spider-Man 2 post credits stinger featuring Mystique, Havok (Lucas Till) and Toad (Evan Jonigkeit) [see here], a clip of Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) with Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen) and Kitty (Ellen Page) as he prepares to travel back in time [see here], and a couple of Sentinel-centric TV spots [see here]. Phew, that’s a lot of footage, and we’ve still got the best part of two weeks to go yet…

X-Men: Days of Future Past may still be a couple of weeks away, but Singer is already turning his attention to 2016′s X-Men: Apocalypse, hinting that he could be set to bring in a few familiar faces such as Cyclops, Storm and Jean Grey alongside the previously confirmed Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Beast (Nicholas Hoult) in the 1980s-set follow-up: “My next goal is how did the X-Men come together? That story hasn’t been told yet, so Days of Future Past is the inbetweenquel. It’s in between the birth of that relationship with Charles and Erik and the formation of the X-Men… In a way it feels like from this point forward we can do whatever we want but we’ll be moving forward with some of the actors from the First Class/Days of Future Past cast, so there’s stuff we’ve done in these last couple of movies that we’ll definitely continue doing for them, at least in Apocalypse, if not more movies going forward…”

James-Marsen-Cyclops…While you’d have to imagine that Singer and Fox will recast Cyclops, Storm and Jean with younger actors if they do make an appearance in Apocalypse, original X-Men star James Marsden isn’t quite ready to rule out a possible return as Scott Summers at some point in the future, stating that: “I’ve always been very proud of my role and it’s out of my hands [whether I'll get to play the character again]. It’s nice to see Bryan go back in and turn the boat a little bit. I’m happy for those that made it back. I’d like to. I get excited watching the trailers because I’m excited for the continuance of the X-Men world. I’m a fan of X-Men and I know it’ll be a kick ass movie. I loved being a part of those movies. It was a great group of people. It was rare to get fans excited for a comic book movie, and do well at the box office with films that critics loved, too. I mean nobody doesn’t like them…”

…It’s being reported that Hugh Jackman will likely reprise the role of Logan for X-Men: Apocalypse, but with the star indicating that the third Wolverine movie could be his last time donning the claws, Flickering Myth’s Gavin Logan has written an op-ed exploring Jackman’s legacy as Logan and the future of the character on screen [read it here], while we’ve also been given a taste of what might have been thanks to some concept art from illustrator Miles Teves from back in 1997 when Mel Gibson was under consideration for the adamantium-clawed mutant. Check it out here

…With filming now underway on The Fantastic Four, it has been revealed that Reg E. Cathey (The Wire) has joined the cast of the Josh Trank-helmed reboot in the role of Dr. Storm – meaning that it looks like Sue (Kate Mara) will be the adopted sibling, rather than Michael B. Jordan’s Johnny Storm. The Fantastic Four is currently shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, with a cast that also includes Miles Teller (Divergent) as Mr. Fantastic, Jamie Bell (Nymphomaniac) as The Thing, Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) as Doctor Doom and Tim Blake Nelson (The Incredible Hulk) as Harvey Elder…

ultimate-fantastic-four-crossover-1…Sticking with The Fantastic Four and writer-producer Simon Kinberg has spoken about the tone of the reboot:” The energy on set is great. Josh Trank is fantastic on set. Really in command, really clear, and the thing that is most unique or defining about the new Fantastic Four is the tone. We’re approaching it in a much more realistic, grounded, science rather than science-fiction way. The playfulness or goofiness of those other movies is very, very different from what we’re trying to do, and that is true for the production design, the casting, the storytelling. But you never know until you get on set how it’s all gonna start to feel, and just seeing those actors and seeing Josh, the way he’s articulating the tone and the way the actors are executing it gives me a lot of confidence that we’ll actually be able to make a cool Fantastic Four movie.” Kinberg also went on to discuss how Fox’s plans for a sequel (already confirmed for July 2017) informed the approach to this first movie; read what he had to say here

…Moving on to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the big news this week came from the small screen, with ABC announcing that it has renewed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a second season, as well as giving an order to the Marvel One-Shot spin-off Agent Carter, which reportedly skip the pilot stage and go straight to series. Here’s the description for Agent Carter, which will see Hayley Atwell reprising her role and the likes of Dominic Cooper (Howard Stark) and Neal McDonough (Dum Dum Dugan) expected to feature (and we’ve also got the official logo here): “It’s 1946, and peace has dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life – Steve Rogers…”

…As for the vastly improved Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team are set for a final showdown with Bill Paxton’s Agent Garrett this coming Tuesday in the season finale ‘Beginning of the End’; check out a promo and poster for the finale, as well as a three-minute clip over at Marvel’s official website, and be sure to read Anghus Houvouras’ review of the previous episode ‘Ragtag’, which you can find here

…In a couple of other bits and pieces from the MCU, Trevor Hogg spoke to stunt coordinator Thomas Robinson Harper about his work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier [read the interview here], Marvel dropped a couple of new images of Chris Pratt (The LEGO Movie) as Star-Lord from August’s Guardians of the Galaxy as Disney CEO Bob Iger spoke about the studio’s hopes for franchise potential with the cosmic superhero team [see here], and Jake Peffer posted a featuring ranking all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies to date. Check out his article here and be sure to let us know how you feel the MCU movies stack up against each other…

sigourney-weaverDespite the fact that her character failed to make it to the end credits of Avatar, Sigourney Weaver is currently gearing up for a reunion with director James Cameron on his three back-to-back sequels to the highest-grossing film of all time, and during an interview with Vulture the Aliens star shared a few thoughts on the mammoth production:

“It’s going to be an adventure! It will be awesome. I can’t even imagine what I am taking on — and what James Cameron is taking on — with filming three Avatars at once, but … Peter Jackson did it with the Hobbit films, so we have that to look to. It will be challenging for me. I can’t talk about it, but my part is a little different in each one. I’ll transform somewhat.”

Weaver is set to be joined in the cast of Avatar 2, Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 by the returning Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, while Stephen Lang will also be back for the three sequels, despite the fact his character Colonel Miles Quaritch also bought the farm in the first movie.

Sabotage Poster

SYNOPSIS:

A group of DEA Agents are picked off one by one after $10 million dollars disappears from a drug cartel.

Sabotage2

Arnie’s return to the big screen has been a mixed bag and Sabotage is no different. Here Arnie plays Breacher, the leader of a group of unsavoury DEA Agents who start dying in a range of inventive ways after $10 million goes missing after a cartel drugs bust.

There is no denying that Sabotage has some excellent set pieces and its opening and closing sequences offer more gunshot wounds to the head than The Departed. Unfortunately it’s a flawed film and a slight disappointment. The pacing of the film feels off and it drags in places as we wait for the next explosion of violence.

But its main flaw is that all of the DEA Agents we’re supposed to care for are inherently unlikeable. The film begins with the team busting up a drug cartel – a good days work – then our heroes decide to take $10 million for themselves and the audience is apparently supposed to be ok with this. The various characters with macho names like Neck, Grinder, Tripod, Sugar, Monster and strangely Lizzy are not nice people. They start fights, have no respect for the law and are generally aggravating to watch. As the film continues we do get some depth to their characters, but if you don’t care who lives or dies then it’s difficult to have any empathy. We do feel for Arnie’s hardened leader Breacher and when the motives are revealed there is some redemption for the bunch of misfits.

Arnie is the saviour of this film and there’s no denying that at the ripe age of 66, he’s still got it. Sabotage demands him to act more than he has in his previous films and surprisingly he carries it off quite well. An unnecessary relationship with hardened cop (a miscast Olivia Williams) throws things off a bit, but ultimately Arnie prevails. Sabotage is nowhere near the likes of Predator, The Terminator, True Lies et al, but it is a film that celebrates why we still find Arnie watchable after all these years. The film’s finale showcases the high speed chase, gun in hand sequence that made him in my opinion the greatest action hero of all time.

It is a shame that the script and supporting cast don’t live up to what could have been a good film. Writer David Ayer has delivered some exceptional films including Training Day and last year’s sublime End of Watch. What these two films have is heart and that’s what Sabotage is missing. Arnie, Sam Worthington and Mireille Enos do their best, but the script is weighed down by unnecessary banter between the agents and only short bursts of action.

Sabotage is an enjoyable film, but as we know that Ayer can deliver emotional and sublime action films, Sabotage just feels like a good idea that hasn’t translated to the screen.

Harrison Ford’s Han Solo to have a leading role in Star Wars: Episode VII

Han-Solo-OldAfter close to a year and a half of speculation, last month finally brought confirmation that Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will return to their iconic roles from the original Star Wars trilogy in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sequel Star Wars: Episode VII.

While Hamill and Fisher had pretty much confirmed their involvement from the very first moment Disney announced a new movie, Ford had held his cards much closer to his chest, which wasn’t much of a surprise given that he’s spent the best part of the past three decades distancing himself from the smuggler-turned-Rebel hero.

Well according to Entertainment Weekly, it seems that Ford’s decision to return was secured by an early meeting with George Lucas prior to Lucasfilm’s sale to Disney, and that “Ford will join three of the young stars as one of the leads in the story”, as opposed to Hamill and Fisher, who will be limited to “strong supporting parts.”

So, if Han is to have a leading role in the film, does that mean Ford’s wish for a no-doubt heroic exit will finally come true?

Star Wars: Episode VII is set for release on December 18th 2015, with a cast that also includes returning stars Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Kenny Baker (R2-D2) and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) alongside Domhnall Gleeson (Dredd), John Boyega (Attack the Block), Daisy Ridley (Silent Witness), Adam Driver (Girls), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Andy Serkis (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Max von Sydow (The Exorcist).
