Movie Review – Sabotage (2014)

Sabotage, 2014.

Directed by David Ayer.
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam Worthington, Olivia Williams, Terence Howard, Joe Manganiello, Josh Holloway, Max Martini, Harold Perrineau, and Mireille Enos.

SYNOPSIS:

Members of an elite DEA task force find themselves being taken down one by one after they rob a drug cartel safe house.

wk-sabotage0328-4

A lot has been written about Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to the acting game. After his political stint, many were excited by his return to what he does best, blowing bad guys away and gracing us with some new one-liners. But despite his choice of roles being decent, and more in keeping with his age, it has largely been ignored by the current crop of moviegoers.

Sabotage, his third major role since his return, was seen as the film that would stand the best chance of both reacquainting Schwarzenegger fans with their hero, but allow the new generation to his rare and unsurpassed talents. Sadly, it hasn’t worked out that way: a disastrous opening in the US (his worst in 30 years) coupled with some horrendous reviews have sunk the film. So with its UK release imminent, will the film, and Arnie, find a second wind? With a heavy heart, it’s sad to say no.

It should have worked though: a teaming with David Ayer’s gritty, realistic sensibilities should have brought out both some classic Arnie action as well as the more seasoned, “I’m-too-old-for-this-shit” characteristics. But while Schwarzenegger is decently served here, Sabotage as a movie is a damp squib, and in turn the year’s biggest disappointment thus far.

Ayer’s previous directorial works have produced some decent stuff, with his last effort, End of Watch, his first truly great film. That effort certainly had its fair share of twists and turns, and showcased the director maturing, keeping all his hallmarks but creating a more well-rounded film than say Harsh Times, which was good in spirits. With Sabotage, however, while the grit and realism remains, and there are some decent action set-pieces (the opening scene being the highlight) it serves as a step back, a lazy, over-confident film that suffers from heightened expectation.

And, as Arnie and co. struggle to find out who has double-crossed their high-profile DEA detail, the film gets caught adrift in a sea of dull action, awful dialogue and plot twists more signposted than the M25. No surprises really when you consider that the co-writer, Skip Woods, is the man responsible for the unforgivably dire first Wolverine outing and the awful Hitman screen adaptation.

Sadly, though Schwarzenegger does come out of the film okay, the rest of the cast are left to wrestle with what little character pittance is left.  Mireille Eros’ Lizzy, of The Killing US fame, is an wearisome bore; Worthington provides little evidence that he is capable of more than just his exertions on Pandora; Olivia Williams is horribly mis-cast; and Terence Howard, who was sorely underrated in Prisoners at the tail end of last year, is relegated to an substitute-like role, only coming to any sort of prominence as the film races to desperately reclaim the match.

It is certainly one of Schwarzenegger’s better acting roles, with a decent sized amount of meat on Breacher’s bones in more ways than one, and it’s easy to see why he took this one on in the first place. But such is lack of quality around him, it cannot really be seen as anything but a disappointment for The Terminator.

What should have been a thrilling time at the cinema is sadly a damp squib on almost all counts. Bar a decent opening salvo and some all-to-brief flashes of Ayer’s better work, Sabotage is a let-down. Schwarzenegger comes out relatively unscathed in terms of his performance, but like his most iconic character, you have to wonder whether he has become outdated, and the lava pit awaits. For his long-standing fans, we hope the termination can be postponed for a little while yet.

Blu-ray Review – The Delta Force (1986)

The Delta Force, 1986.

Directed by Menaham Golan.
Starring Chuck Norris, Lee Marvin and Robert Forster.

718EqTWsBjL._SL1024_

SYNOPSIS:

During a routine flight from Athens to New York via Rome, Lebanese terrorists take control and insist that the flight heads for Beirut. An elite team, led by Norris and Marvin, are ordered to engage and neutralise the terrorists before the passengers, now potentially hostages, are killed.

deltabike

Split into two succinct parts, Delta Force is a great example of the quintessential action movie made during the 1980’s. Following the terrorist acquisition of the flight, retired war hero Major Scott McCoy (Chuck Norris) returns to his colleagues as part of the Delta Force, an elite group of soldiers. Under the command of Colonel Alexander (Lee Marvin in his final screen role) the group attempts execute their plan to recover the hostages and eliminate the threat led by Abdul Rafai.

The first part tries its best to convey the stress and terror of the passengers and crew of the stricken flight; Shelley Winters and George Kennedy leading the way in this department. Winters pleads with the terrorists as, together with others, her husband is taken from her due to his Jewish sounding surname, while Kennedy (as Father O’Malley) joins the group of separated “Jews” as a follower of Christ. Although the opening has a modicum of dramatics about it of course it doesn’t show Chuck Norris and his talents, and that’s what the rest of the film is rightly all about.

After an aborted attempt at a rescue by supposedly the elite team, the plane lands and the terrorists disembark, together with their “Jewish” hostages, to a stronghold in Beirut. After tracking them down, Norris leads the group, employing a stealth approach by night using landing craft and motorcycles which seemingly defeat the whole idea of a stealth approach. This doesn’t matter though, because the hero is Chuck Norris, and he’s got a motorbike with rocket launchers on it!

One by one the terrorists are picked off, leading Norris to a one-on-one with Rafai. Using his martial arts and jumping-through-windows skills, and his rocket-launching motorbike that doesn’t miss, he eliminates the final threat and rescues the hostages. There is a brief echo of the more serious stage of the film towards the end as a member of the team, one used in a flashback intro to McCoy during the opening credits, succumbs to injuries caused during the battle.

The editing isn’t great and the soundtrack is typical of its time, but on the whole, Delta Force is a great example of what the Cannon studio specialised in and in one of several extras on the disc, Mark Hartley presents a good piece on Cannon’s legacy. This Blu-ray release is the perfect chance to upgrade your old VHS copy or to just enjoy Chuck Norris at possibly his best. Remember, his best is the best of the best.

Avi Arad demands credit for Marvel Cinematic Universe, says he “single handedly put together the Marvel slate”

Marvel-Studios-Logo1A couple of weeks ago BusinessWeek writer Devin Leonard wrote an article entitled The Man Who Saved Marvel, heaping praise on Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, the mastermind behind the hugely successful Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is currently the second-biggest movie franchise of all time (and closing fast on Harry Potter).

Well, it seems that former Marvel Studios Chairman and CEO Avi Arad (producer of The Amazing Spider-Man 2) has taken exception to what he describes as false reporting on BusinessWeek’s part, releasing an email to Leonard through French site Daily Mars where he looks to set the record straight about his departure from Marvel Studios and his part in establishing the MCU, stating that he “single-handedly” putting together the Marvel movie slate…

Good morning Devin. As usual you manage to disappoint me with your false statements. I am sure you were told by Marvel that I resigned over the self-financing strategy. It is about time for a reporter like you to do your homework and check the facts. It will sound arrogant to you, but I single handedly put together the Marvel slate. Read it carefully and you will notice the natural progression of the character’s design to get to where we are today.

You should reach out to Merill Lynch and Ambac Insurance and to our international partners that came on board based on my track record. Our financial partners counted on my reputation. I had to work very hard to convert the doubters. They trusted me and without Iron Man this article would have not been written. Iron Man was not even in the original slate. I knew that we needed it so I set out to get it back from Newline and the rest is history.

Our financing would have never happened without me reaching out to Brad Grey to make a distribution deal that will give you a corporate guarantee. Other people in Marvel worked for many months with Universal and could not reach a deal. I got tired of waiting and went to Brad. The deal was done in days, successful for both companies. The big presentation to financial institutions and insurance companies took place on the Paramount lot. I was the presenter and it worked. Does this sound to you like someone who disagreed with the strategy to make our own movies?

I have forgiven Kevin for following orders and taking the credit, but he had no choice. Shame on you for kowtowing to your business gods. I have given up on journalistic integrity. You called me to talk about Kevin and I gave you the most true and glowing account on someone that I love and respect. Share your notes otherwise you just wasted my time. I will share this letter with other papers and your management to demonstrate the unprofessional self-serving work this reporter demonstrated.

Of course, we don’t really know what’s gone on behind-the-scenes here, but there’s a big difference between pushing for an Iron Man movie and actually overseeing the creation and development one of the most successful franchises in Hollywood.

Material leaves iTunes users in stitches

material coverA family owned textile shop on the verge of bankruptcy and an aspiring Muslim stand-up comedian feature in Material which was written and directed by Craig Freimond (Gums & Noses).  The South African comedy screened at The World Film Festival in Montreal and Busan International Film Festival; originally released in 2012, the movie has now entered the digital realm of iTunes.

It’s Ebrahim’s (Vincent Ebrahim) dream for Cassim (Riaad Moosa) to take over the shop, but Cassim has discovered a talent for stand-up comedy, and he soon finds himself in direct conflict with his father, his family and his community.

Ebrahim Kaif has been embroiled with a 30 year feud with his brother which threatens to bankrupt him.  Cassim seeks solace in humour where his experiences being a Muslim in South Africa provides him with satirical material that enables him to launch a career making club patrons laugh; he also with assistance of a childhood friend Yusuf (Joey Rasdien) pursues through a series of misadventures the love of his life.

picsa5

Loosely using the framework of Seinfeld where a comedy routine addresses the action occurring off-stage, filmmaker Craig Freimond is able to put the issues in a societal context.  Riaad Moosa (Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom) is charming as the leading man, Vincent Ebrahim (The Kumars at No. 42) is a hurricane of angst which is overpowering at times, and Denise Newman (Disgrace) is subtle and empathetic in her portrayal of a mother torn between her son and husband.  Helping to add some levity to proceedings is Joey Rasdien (Bunny Chow) who’s on-screen chemistry with Moosa has you believing that they are loyal and mischievous childhood friends.

pic3

There are predictable elements like the once ugly girl reappearing as a beautiful young woman and simple effective moments such as a wayward package which propels the storytelling forward and pays off in the end.  Material has been assembled with a lot of care and provides some good wholesome family entertainment as well dispels some cultural and religious misconceptions along the way.

Material is available to be viewed on iTunes.

oitnb-orange-is-the-new-black-36013389-860-560Season 2 of Orange is the New Black will premiere on Netflix on June 6th and as of today the series has been renewed for a third season. The show’s third season will consist of 13 episodes once again.

The show stars Taylor Schilling as Piper Chapman, a woman who goes to prison and reunites with her old lover Alex Vause (Laura Prepon), the person responsible for her going to prison. Sadly, Prepon’s role was cut down for season 2 but it has already been confirmed that she will return as a series regular for season 3.

This renewal came as no surprise to anyone really as the series has already become the biggest hit for Netflix original series. Orange is the New Black surprised everyone, including myself, last July when it debuted on Netflix and went on to become one of the hottest shows of 2013. History is sure to repeat itself in 2014.

Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Matt Tolmach discuss the ending to The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Warning – Major spoilers for the ending of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 follow. If you’re yet to see the movie, you should turn back now…

tasm2slider

We’ve already heard a few comments from director Marc Webb about the shocking climax to Sony’s superhero sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2 [read his thoughts here], as Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man fails to save his true love Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) from falling to her death during the climactic final battle with the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan). Well, now stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone and producer Matt Tolmach have shared their thoughts on ‘The Night Gwen Stacy Died’ during an interview with ComicBookResources.

tasm2-super-bowl“I knew from the very beginning what the intention was for Gwen’s arc,” said Stone regarding the death of her character. “I thought it was executed well.”

“It’s a defining moment in the comics, and not just in the Spider-Man comics, but in comic book history,” states Garfield. “It’s a fact that we lose people. People die. Death is strangely a part of life. You can’t have life without death. It’s an amazing thing, and a shocking thing, for audiences of these types of films to witness. Especially with such a beloved character… I think it’s incredibly bold and incredibly necessary, to keep pushing the envelopes and the boundaries of what these movies can contain. There’s a tendency to want to be safe, and a tendency to want to please everybody, and to not ruffle any feathers. There are so many of these movies out, so how do we make sure this one stands out and needs to be seen? We can go and see Captain America and The Avengers and Superman and whatever — but what is it about this film?”

Page4“I think the love story we’ve created between Gwen and Peter is very authentic and very deep,” Garfield continues. “It tugs the heartstrings because it’s truthful. How do we subvert that? I think it’s one of the strongest parts of that first film, the love story. So I think it’s very interesting to subvert it, and to explore where Peter goes from here. You have to give it complete, fair credence, because it’s huge, this post-traumatic stress,” said Garfield. “It’s huge, genuine PTSD for Peter Parker. How is he going to continue fighting? How is he going to continue loving? Will he ever be able to love again? Will he be able to have any personal relationships in his life ever again? What does it do to his power, his ability to fight, his compassion as a human being? These are all the big questions that I’m starting to ask about where we go next.”

And Tolmach weighed in on the decision to include Gwen Stacy in the rebooted Spider-Man using, stating that it was inevitable that the character would meet a tragic end: “When you decide that you’re going to tell the Gwen Stacy story, you know you’re going to end up there. You just try to put it off for a little while, because you don’t want to lose Emma. You don’t want to lose Gwen. You don’t want to lose that dynamic. But these movies are all about Peter Parker and his journey in life and as Spider-Man. You’re constantly having to turn the screws on him. This was a movie that, on many levels, is about hope. What’s the best way to convey that? It’s easy if you make a movie about someone who is doing pretty well, but your message of hope is going to fall kind of flat. You want to make a movie about someone who is brought to their knees, and they’re able to find hope in the end. That’s inspiring and challenging.”

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is out now with a cast that includes Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker), Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), Sally Field (Aunt May), Chris Zylka (Flash Thompson), Campbell Scott (Richard Parker), Embeth Davidtz (Mary Parker), Martin Sheen (Ben Parker) and Denis Leary (George Stacy) alongside new additions Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained) as Electro, Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) as Harry Osborn, Paul Giamatti (12 Years a Slave) as The Rhino, Chris Cooper (American Beauty) as Norman Osborn, Colm Feore (Thor) as Donald Menken, Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) as Felicia Hardy, Marton Csokas (The Lord of the Rings) as Dr. Kafka, and B.J. Novak (The Office) as Alistair Smythe. Read our reviews here, here and here.

Following on from our earlier report (see it here) that the new FOX series Gotham has been picked up for a full season, a trailer has been released.

Showing off not only the future Commissioner Gordon but also plenty of other characters that will go on to have huge part to play in Batman’s world, I must say I’m pleasantly surprised by how it looks though I’m very weary of so many characters all being tied in so early.

What do you make of it dear readers? Gritty crime drama with well known characters, or a Smallville rip-off? Let us know in the comments!

Gotham is created by Bruno Heller (The Mentalist) and stars Ben McKenzie (The O.C.) as Detective Jim Gordon, Sean Pertwee (Dog Soldiers) as Alfred Pennyworth, Robin Lord Taylor (Another Earth) as Oswald Cobblepot, Donal Logue (Sons of Anarchy) as Harvey Bullock, newcomer Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, David Mazouz (Touch) as Bruce Wayne, Cory Michael Smith (Olive Kitteridge) as Edward Nygma, Jada Pinkett Smith (The Matrix) as Fish Mooney, Zabryna Guevara (The Guilt Trip) as Detective Essen, Erin Richards (Being Human) as Barbara Kean, and Drew Powell (Malcolm in the Middle) as Butch Gilzean.

Game of Thrones Season Four – Episode 5 Review

Villordsutch reviews the fifth episode of Game of Thrones Season Four….

game-of-thrones-first-of-his-name-4“First of His Name”

Directed Michelle MacLaren

Script by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss

Know your strengthsUse them wisely. And one man can be worth 10,000”

There is something ever so slightly off with Game of Thrones recently. I’m not disliking it, far from it – each scene I’m finding fantastically played out and I cannot fault the actors nor the roles they are occupying, nor those behind the camera and what they are producing.  Yet I can’t help but feel it’s losing its grand feel to it and small sets are being given to us in bite sized pieces.  This is a bit disheartening as we’ve only just struck episode five and I’m getting claustrophobic with the sound-stages and I dream for the white barren landscapes of Iceland, scarred only with black volcanic rock or Beyond the Wall if you will (depending on how you roll).   Perhaps this is a Michelle MacLaren way of directing, perhaps this is what she likes to give us, little appetisers to keep us hungry for more.  Well I’m starving and looking forward to a large dinner I can really get my teeth into.

Still placing the above to one side, I was did find myself barking out with laughter within minutes of the opening of last night’s episode, not with (Squire in training) Pod and his first attempt at serving up rabbit for Brienne,  but with Littlefinger (Petyr Baelish) and the fact that Westeros is in its current turmoil state with the Starks and Lannisters spat because of the removal of Ned Stark’s head, who initially went to investigate the poisoning of Jon Arryn, the hand of Robert Baratheon and the late husband of Lysa Arryn, who is now the current wife of Petyr Baelish the new Lord of the Vale. We then discover it was Lysa Arryn who poisoned  her husband on request of Petyr Baelish who told Ned Stark, “Distrusting me was the wisest thing you did since you climbed of your horse.”.  I laughed and uttered the words, “What a sneaky bastard!”  Baelish is now in the seat of one of the most powerful houses in Westeros thanks to this excellent game he has played and is still playing.

However, my heart did in turn break for Sansa Stark, who wished so much to get away from the muddy world of Winterfell and has been granted that wish twice now and now even in the safety of her Aunt’s home she has realised that this gilded cage once again may not be the Palace she wishes to be in now that nobody knows she is her, nor will they.  With her future husband/cousin already showing a few Joffrey loves of sadism, and an aunt who is insanely jealous of her deceased sister being this initial love of Petyr, Petyr owning a brothel, and the belief that he and Sansa have slept together on their journey. Frying pans and fires spring to mind.

Emotions as well as diplomacy were on the cards for the Lannisters and in an odd turnaround for Cersei, she appeared as though the death of Joffrey has finally removed the weight from her shoulders for what initially would have seen her spitting venom at Margery was a more civil, diplomatic and motherly conversation. This again was repeated later on in the show when she walked through the gardens with Oberyn, though this did have the faint odour of attempting to sway a judge.  The scene discussing the Iron Bank and gold mines between Father and Daughter however was fantastic, and also the agreed appropriate time to mourn; I never want Charles Dance to leave and I always look forward to any Lannister family scene with him in it.

Before I end on the action as the episode chose to, so we didn’t feel cheated, I’ll mention Queen of Dragons (Princess Stampyfeet) and her vacuum she has left behind her on the slave freeing travel. I enjoyed the fact that knowing that the “Wine and Roses” of freedom didn’t last for those free of the chains and new rules sprang up more vicious than the last and a belief that once she passed she won’t return.  Though I’m not a huge fan of this part of the GoT storyline, I’m now interested to see what she’ll have to do to stop any further uprisings in her wake.

So to Craster’s Keep – it was bloody, nasty and confusing with Crow against Crow; we really had no idea who was fighting who and all we could really do was cheer on Jon when we witnessed his sword spin, boo at Locke and wince at the other Crows as swords and axes took chunks out of each other.  Granted it was gruesome, but rather pointless to be honest.  The real battle came in the main hall between Jon Snow and Karl Tanner, and as Karl pointed out due to Jon Snow’s honour and fighting like a gentleman he has no chance of winning.  It’s only due to a swift dagger in the shoulder from one of Craster’s old wives that Jon, rather ungentlemanly and without honour, rammed his sword through the back of Karl’s skull giving him a metal tongue and sadly saying goodbye to Burn Gorman.

So all in all some great scenes were stuck together this week giving us a good episode, not overly grand, but it was good never the less.

Rumoured subtitle for Star Wars: Episode VII…?

pic_1363439587_1May the 4th has been and gone and if like me you are reeling in disappointment at the lack of news following the recent cast announcement then this rumour might perk you up a little. Aint It Cool News are reporting that their source within the Star Wars camp – the same person who told them about location shooting in Abu Dhabi – has leaked the title for the upcoming sequel…

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Ancient Fear.

It’s worth noting that this news has had no validation as yet from any other source so please take it with a pinch of salt. The Ancient Fear is currently being referred to as a ‘working title’ so even if it is genuine it may not be the final subtitle. Apparently the title “refers to Max Von Sydow’s villain…” Whether there is any truth to this or not it certainly sounds like an eligible title and harks back to A New Hope.

What are your thoughts?

Star Wars: Episode VII is set for release on December 18th 2015, with returning stars Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Kenny Baker (R2-D2) and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) joined by Adam Driver (Girls), Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), Andy Serkis (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Domhnall Gleeson (Dredd), John Boyega (Attack the Block), Daisy Ridley (Silent Witness), and Max von Sydow (The Exorcist).

Jake Peffer ranks the Marvel Cinematic Universe…

MarvelStudiosLogo

With the recent release of the second Captain America film and the upcoming release of Guardians of the Galaxy, I thought it would be a good time to take a look back at the Marvel Cinematic Universe and rank the films from worst to best. To some degree I enjoy all of the films so far but some are definitely more entertaining and better made than the others. So without further ado here is how I would rank the nine films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe…

From Disney comes Maleficent—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty.
