Shailene Woodley in DivergentLionsgate has decided to split the final chapter of its YA adaptation Divergent, announcing that its adaptation of the third book in Veronica Roth’s trilogy, Allegiant, will be released as two movies, with Part 1 arriving on March 16th 2016 and Part 2 following on March 24th 2017.

This is the same technique that Lionsgate used to stretch out its two other big franchises, with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. The trend started when Warner Bros. extended its Harry Potter cash cow by releasing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows as two movies.

Divergent is out in cinemas now [read our review here] and takes place in a dystopian future where people are divided into factions based upon their personalities, with Shailene Woodley (The Spectacular Now) starring in the lead role as Tris Prior. The second film, Insurgent, is set to open on March 20th, 2015.

The Expanse coming to SyFy

Calibans warDescribed as a “kick ass space opera!” by George R.R. Martin and as the sci-fi equivalent of Game of Thrones by anybody that has read it, The Expanse by James S.A. Corey is heading to the SyFy channel. Set two hundred years in our future this science-fiction thriller follows Detective Miller and a roguish Capitan Jim Holden as an investigation into a missing girl slow unravels a very deep-rooted conspiracy threaded throughout the solar-system.

Taking the reigns for the show are Alcon Television Group, with Oscar-nominated screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men, Iron Man) attached as writers and exec producers.

The Expanse is epic in scale and scope and promises to be Syfy’s most ambitious series to date,” Syfy president Dave Howe said. “Bringing this coveted book franchise to television with our partners at Alcon and the Sean Daniel Co. is a giant win for Syfy, reinforcing our overall strategy to produce bold, provocative and compelling sci-fi fantasy stories. The Expanse joins a killer lineup of high-concept, high-quality series, along with recently announced original projects Ascension, 12 Monkeys, the renewal of Helix, and the soon to premiere Dominion.”

The Expanse series covers three books in Leviathan Wakes, Caliban’s War and Abaddon’s Gate. These books were published through Orbit and with Abaddon’s Gate being published back in June 2013, you still have time to see what you’ve been missing before it starts on SyFy.

The Week in Spandex – Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Captain America vs. Batman vs. Superman and more

Our weekly round up of the latest stories from the world of screen superheroes, including The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Sinister Six, Venom, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America 3, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Daredevil, Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse, Batman vs. Superman, Arrow, Batman: Strange Days, Son of Batman, Teen Titans Go! and more….

Dane DeHaan as the Green GoblinWe’ve already seen Captain America: The Winter Soldier setting box office records, and now we’re just days away from the arrival of 2014′s second superhero offering The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which is due to open here in the UK on Wednesday ahead of a North American release on May 2nd. The Marc Webb-directed sequel is currently tracking a $95 million opening weekend in the States, which would put it roughly on par with that of The Winter Soldier. Flickering Myth’s Matt Spencer-Skeen was lucky enough to catch a press screening of the film; here’s an excerpt from his ★★★★ review:

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has obvious flaws, with too much CGI dominating the action sequences as they did in the trailers and parts where too much story drags the rest of the film down… That said this definitely feels like a movie that is taking the franchise forward, giving us a greater understanding and empathy for our hero than many others in this genre care to allow. It’s not going to change superhero films, but it will change how we view the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man.

If you haven’t already, you can read Matt’s full review here

…Ahead of its release, Webb and stars Garfield, Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy), Jamie Foxx (Electro) and Dane DeHaan (Harry Osborn) were among the guests of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 world premiere in Leicester Square on Thursday evening, and we’ve got highlights of all the red carpet action for you here. And of course, as we’ve come to learn over the past few months, a week can’t go by without a new trailer for the flick and this week has been no exception, offering up an alternate cut of the “final trailer” (a.k.a. the “final, final trailer… until the next one”) which you can see here, along with a couple of TV spots, a ‘Scoring Spidey’ featurette and two new Daily Bugle viral articles featuring Spidey villains Big Man and Carnage…

The Sinister Six…With The Amazing Spider-Man 2 imminent, it seems that Sony is keen to press on with its plans to expand the universe with its upcoming spin-offs for Venom and The Sinister Six. We already know Alex Kurtzman is set to direct Venom, and it’s now been confirmed that Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) will double up as writer and director of The Sinister Six. Meanwhile, Spidey producer Matt Tolmach has revealed that the studio’s plans regarding the proposed 2018 release for The Amazing Spider-Man 4 have changed, and that we’ll now see both spin-offs before the web-slinger’s fourth solo outing: “Before we know what we do with Spider-Man 4, we’re going to do Sinister Six, Venom and The Amazing Spider-Man 3. There is going to be a lot of crossover in those movies. So we’re just not at Spider-Man 4, because we still have a whole other Spider-Man movie and two other movies. So we don’t know yet what [Spider-Man 4] is going to be…”

…Moving on from Sony now and Marvel Studios has had plenty to celebrate with the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, with the Chris Evans-headlined solo sequel setting a domestic box-office record for April with a whopping $96.2 million haul. By close of play last weekend, The Winter Soldier had banked over $303 million globally, putting it ahead of the MCU’s lowest-earner The Incredible Hulk ($263.4 million), and the sequel should overtake Captain America: The First Avenger ($370.6 million) this weekend to challenge the $449.3 million take of 2011′s Thor

…Buoyed on by the success of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel Studios took the opportunity to officially confirm that Captain America 3 will hit cinemas on May 6th 2016, which as we know is the exact same date as Warner Bros.’ big DC release Batman vs. Superman. Presumably Warner Bros. felt the need to follow suit, with the studio’s president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman reaffirming – although not entirely convincingly – that the Man of Steel sequel would also arrive on that date: “It doesn’t make a lot of sense for two huge superhero films to open on the same date but there is a lot of time between now and May 6th 2016. However, at this time, we are not considering a change of date for Batman vs. Superman…”

Chris Pratt as Star-LordChris Pratt as Star-Lord…Shifting back to the MCU and Marvel Studios has also offered up the first clip from its second offering of the year Guardians of the Galaxy, which sees Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) making his escape from Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou), as well as four new images of Star-Lord and his Guardians comrades Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel)…

…It looks like we’ll be getting a World War II-era flashback next year with Avengers: Age of Ultron, with CBM posting a couple of images from yesterday’s shoot at London’s Rivoli Ballroom showing extras dressed in WWII military uniforms. Both Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter) were said to be on set, along with (somewhat curiously) Paul Bettany, who is reportedly set to become the Vision in the eagerly-anticipated sequel…

…On the small screen, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stepped up its game this past week with the Captain America: The Winter Soldier tie-in episode ‘Turn, Turn, Turn’. You can read Anghus Houvouras’ (mostly) spoiler free review here, and if you’ve seen the episode (and The Winter Soldier), then check out a few comments about the episode’s twists and turns from star Brett Dalton (Agent Grant Ward) here. As the first season of the show draws towards its climax, it’s been confirmed that Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) will both be back for guest-starring roles, with Smulders set to appear on the April 29th episode and Jackson popping up in the season finale, which is set to air on May 13th. But before then, the Agents have to deal with the fall-out of ‘Turn, Turn, Turn’ in this week’s episode ‘Providence’ – check out a promo and clip, along with a poster from the episode by Marvel artist Paulo Rivera here

Daredevil…And in one other piece of Marvel small screen news, Dexter star Michael C. Hall has addressed the rumours linking him to the role of Matt Murdock in the upcoming Netflix series Daredevil, which is due to kick off production in New York City in July: “I would definitely consider it… but I can’t tell you any inside information because I think they’re nothing but rumours…”

…Before we move on from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’ve posted a few MCU-related special features here at Flickering Myth this week – be sure to check out Anghus Houvouras’ The Marvel Moviemaking Model: Can It Be Stopped? and Who Is Engineering The Age of Ultron, along with Anthony Stokes’ Why Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Doesn’t Deserve a Second Season

…On the Marvel animation – or rather anime – front, we’ve got the first look at the new anime series Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers, which has been produced by Toei Animation and Walt Disney Japan. Click here to see the opening title sequence, as well as a clip from the first episode (in Japanese, with English subtitles)…

…Turning to 20th Century Fox now and the studio has been paving the way for the arrival of the final trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past on Tuesday (April 15th) with some fresh promotional material for the mutant superhero sequel, including a first featurette [see here], a batch of new images featuring Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Past Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Past Professor X (James McAvoy), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Colossus (Daniel Cudmore), Storm (Halle Berry), Future Magneto (Ian McKellen) and Future Professor X (Patrick Stewart) [see here], two new posters showcasing Colossus, Bling (Fan Bingbing), Iceman (Shawn Ashmore) and Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) [see here], and a new viral site and video entitled ’25 Moments in the Struggle Between X-Men and Humans’ [see here]…

X-Men: Apocalypse…With Days of Future Past a little over a month away from release, Bryan Singer’s attention is starting to shift towards 2016′s X-Men: Apocalypse; the director has confirmed that James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult will all be back for the next sequel, as well as speaking a little about the plot: ““[X-Men: Days of Future Past] won’t necessarily create an alternate universe, but there may be some swapping things that I’m playing with. You won’t feel at the end of the movie that it set up Apocalypse. What it does is it sets up possibilities. But what we’ll discover in Apocalypse is that events in this movie made that happen. Apocalypse deals with ancient mutancy. What would humans have thought mutants were? What would mutants think humans were? You’re dealing with gods and things like that. And what if one survived and what if that found its way into our world? I’m excited because I want to start introducing familiar characters at different ages and also explore the ‘80s.”

…As for those familiar faces, Singer has once again name dropped Gambit and Nightcrawler as two characters he’d like to introduce, while producer Lauren Shuler Donner has highlighted Gambit and Deadpool as two potential spin-offs, with writer-producer Simon Kinberg also hinting that Jennifer Lawrence’s Raven Darkholme could get a solo movie: ““I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo…”

Batman vs. Superman…Over at Warner Bros., DC Comics go-to guy David S. Goyer has spoken about the studio’s ambitions to launch a cohesive movie universe, suggesting that it’s still early days with regards to plans, as well as playing down talk of direct competition with Marvel Studios: “I know that Warner Bros. would love to make their universe more cohesive. There have been a lot of general conversations about that, but it’s really, really early. I’m not sure. Marvel has had enormous success, but I’m not sure that everybody should try to emulate them either. It’s just been vague conversations so far.” If that’s the case, then the report that WB is set to announce a slate of DC movies “in the near future” certainly sounds a little premature…

…Sticking with WB’s one definite DC movie and former Wonder Woman Lynda Carter has spoken about how she’d like to see the Amazon Princess portrayed in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel Batman vs. Superman. “I’m in [Gal Gadot's] corner. I just hope they write well for her. I’m very hopeful she embodies the essence of Wonder Woman. It’s less about super powers and more about heart and intellect and a sense of right and wrong with a goodness in her. Often times, writers really want to take a male superhero and dress him up as a female – and that’s just not who she is… They make Wonder Woman a macho Superman type character – they make her mean – and that’s not who she is…”

…This week’s episode of Arrow ‘The Man Under the Hood’ is set to tie in with The CW’s upcoming pilot for The Flash, with executive producer Marc Guggenheim offering up a few details to Collider: “Danielle Panabaker, who plays Caitlin, and Carlos Valdes, who plays Cisco, two members of Star Labs that are part of the regular cast of The Flash, do make an important appearance in Episode 19 of Arrow.  This was something that really came about because Barry was in a coma at the end of Episode 9 and that made it impossible for Barry to appear in Episode 19 or 20 of Arrow.  He’s gotta stay in a coma until October of next year.  But, the idea of bringing in those characters really appealed to us because it allowed us to honor our original intention that we had at the beginning of the year, to do something Flash-related in Episode 19 or 20, without having comatose Barry and paying Grant Gustin a lot of money to sit around with his eyes closed, unconscious for the whole episode.  We wrote that episode and it’s really boring.  But this episode is really cool and it allows us to further flesh out The Flash universe in Arrow.  We get to see their dynamic.  They actually shot their scenes for the Arrow episode, contemporaneous with shooting The Flash pilot.  Both Episode 19 and The Flash were in production at the exact same time.  That isn’t why we did it.  That was an added producing / logistical complication.  But, it’s just so much fun to see these characters.  It’s like previewing Boba Fett in the Holiday Special.  Hopefully, Episode 19 will be a little bit better than the Holiday Special, but you can see the analogy…”

…And finally, on the DC animation front, Cartoon Network celebrated 75 years of the Dark Knight this past week with a special DC Nation short from Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Bruce Timm entitled Batman: Strange Days [you can watch the entire short here - it's wonderful!], while we’ve got a batch of new images from the upcoming DC Universe Animated Original Movie release Son of Batman [see here], and The World’s Finest has clips and images from this coming Wednesday’s instalment of Teen Titans Go!, entitled ‘Mas y Menos’.

Submerged: Kel Symons talks about The Mercenary Sea

Trevor Hogg chats with Kel Symons about movies, comic books and submerging himself with an swashbuckling tale…

damn issue 3 page

Kel Symons I Love Trouble signing“My mother was an RN, and my father was a lawyer,” states Kel Symons. “Though I think my dad semi-secretly wished he’d become a writer; I know he was a huge movie fan and helped inform my taste for the same. My brother played music for a while, and did some acting, but mostly in high school. I’m told one of my uncles on my mother’s side wrote and directed local theatre, but I don’t really know them.” The object of affection for Betty and Veronica as well as the space opera staring Luke Skywalker were part of the childhood reading repertoire. “I wasn’t really allowed to read superhero comics growing up. I could only read stuff like Archie & Jughead, Richie Rich, and Scrooge McDuck – that sort of thing. I can’t really remember much from those, except maybe that Richie Rich had stubby little legs and weird knees. Seriously, how did that guy even move around?”

Star_Wars_Weekly_Vol_1_1

“I read the Marvel Star Wars books; those I remember pretty fondly,” recalls Symons. “Too fondly, perhaps, having re-read them a few years ago in the Dark Horse collections, and seeing just how many times they just ripped off popular movies, like The Magnificent Seven [1960], and transmogrified them into the Star Wars universe. Seriously, Eli Wallach [The Good, The Bad and The Ugly] was clearly ripped off and just given blasters instead of six-shooters. Also, a six-foot tall green rabbit-alien named ‘Jaxxon.’ Still better than Jar-Jar, though. In the 80s I started reading Batman [probably around the time the movie was coming out] and the Batman book that definitely left an impression was Arkham Asylum. Really opened the door to what a comic could be – so far beyond just four-colour panels and traditional storytelling.”

Arkham Asylum

The digital age has transformed the publishing industry. “Given that I’ve worked on three books now and so far not one of the artists or colourists I’ve worked with lived in the same city as I do – and in one case on a different continent – obviously being able to send material back and forth via email or FTP has been hugely beneficial,” remarks Kel Symons. “To think that not too long ago, this was all done via mail is a little unsettling, with one-of-a-kind art traversing the globe, at the mercy of the mails, and probably weeks lost just in transit times.” The potential of big screen adaptations has influenced comic book publishers when accepting proposals. “I’ve even had meetings with some who were basically looking for IP they can sell to Hollywood. Image Comics isn’t like that and that’s a good thing. Let comic books be comic books.”

batman-begins-set-christopher-nolan

Christopher Nolan and his Dark Knight Trilogy have elevated the comic book movie genre. “Not only do those films stand beside the best action films studios are putting out, they hold their own against critical darlings and serious dramas,” observes Kel Symons. “[Ok, the third one was a bit strained, but I give them kudos for being that ambitious]. Marvel’s long term plan for their universe is impressive. Movie studios don’t normally see things so far-reaching so that level of engineering and design spanning multiple properties stands out as quite an achievement. But I think audiences are already getting a bit of a hangover from superhero movies, and it’s only going to get worse. The wall-to-wall action, constant upping of the stakes to include world-shattering events, and some of these third acts tend to come off as only so much noise, and the characters get lost in all that action.” Flaws make heroes more identifiable. “I think that’s why books like The Walking Dead, Fables, Fatale or Y: The Last Man do so well. It’s not like fans aren’t still reading Batman or Spider-Man comics; it’s just that they’re given alternatives – really good ones. Hollywood will eventually figure out they have to do the same.”

comic-minute-fatale-1

Batman Begins [2005] is the very best of the contemporary comic book movies,” remarks Symons. “I liked Iron Man [2008] quite a bit and I’m a Joss Whedon geek so I liked The Avengers [2012]. Though the ending was some of that noise I mentioned above. At least in the middle of all that we had that great Hulk/Thor moment. Like Joss said, ‘Yeah, I know, there’s a lot of crazy shit going on here. But check it out: I can still make you laugh in the midst of all that.’ Though I would say one of my all-time favourites is Flash Gordon from 1980. Love that one. Yeah, it’s cheesy. But man, is it good cheese.” Symons compares himself to a British cinematic icon. “It’s very possible I don’t ever learn anything! Unlike a fictional character who has an arc and evolves over the course of a story, I’m pretty much the same at the end as I was in the beginning. I don’t evolve. Sorta like James Bond; he never really changes. You know what? I’m EXACTLY like James Bond. Print that!”

harrison-ford-alfred-molina-raiders-of-the-lost-ark

firefly_crewRaiders [1981] was imagination fuel for 12 year old Kel Symons,” reveals the creator of a new Image Comics title where a motley submarine crew-for-hire embark on a series of swashbuckling exploits. “So many adventures with action figures and Legos were born from that, and basically I’m telling those same stories all over again, only now in comic book form. But both Firefly [Fox, 2002] and Raiders were these fully formed universes, where you can see adventures springing forth time and time again. That’s the basis of what I’m doing here – a world of possibility. In terms of them inspiring The Mercenary Sea, while they weren’t our only inspirations, they were clearly the most identifiable. Basically, this series is for anyone who ever felt their childhood was spoiled after Kingdom of the Crystal Skull [2008], or who felt a lonely, unfillable hole in the ‘verse left by the absence their space-friends after Firefly was cancelled.”

MercenarySea-01-pg1

“I liked that world of 1938,” explains Symons. “The globe hasn’t been entirely mapped, with adventure and mystery just over the horizon – only you don’t know what you’ll find when you get there. I like that these characters are standing on the brink of this world-changing event – the world was irrevocably changed by WWII. We were never the same. I like taking us right up to that point with characters who live in that moment. From a practical standpoint, though, I wanted the backstory of Jack and the crew of Venture to be similar to the Flying Tigers, mercenaries who fought for China against Japan. What can I say other than I thought that was cool. As for research, I do just enough. I want to avoid factual errors, but I’m also not writing a history book. I’m not married to the facts. Or if I am, the facts and I have an understanding. It’s just a story – a solid adventure. Not an essay on the Second Sino-Japanese War, or the inner workings of a WWI-era submarine, or an analysis of Pacific island cultures. But I’ll tell you that I watched A LOT of period sub movies.”

MercenarySea-01-pg2

MercenarySea-01-pg3Multiple storylines need to be plotted. “I have it mostly in my head, though I’ve started to lay out events for the next big story arc, which will begin hopefully next February,” explains Kel Symons. “Occasionally Mathew [Reynolds] will do something with the art that I have to walk him back from, because I don’t want it interfering with some of the long-term goals I have for the series and characters. Right now, the way Mathew and I have it planned, we’re going to put out between 8 to 10 issues per year for the next few years. A single story arc will make up the bulk of each year, and there might be a few one-off adventures. But as Indy says, ‘I’m making this up as I go.’ All right, that’s not entirely true – I know how it all ends.” The Mercenary Sea does not rely on a single protagonist. “Ten crew members [including the dog] plus half a dozen other characters are introduced in less than 30 pages in the first issue. It was a lot to juggle. This is where using archetypes comes in very handy. I was able to get their personalities across to the reader pretty quickly – the criminal with a code of honour, the gruff sea captain, and the sarcastic comic relief. But once established, these archetypes will begin to emerge as distinct personalities, not just stock characters; they just need a little room to run.”

MercenarySea-02-pg1

Incorporating exposition and keeping the story moving forward is always a challenge. “You gotta do what you can to not get bogged down in updates on where we are in the story and the world,” notes Kel Symons. “This is especially true of an issue 1, where you have to ease the reader into what is presumably a fully realized world they’re just becoming aware of. It’s always something that’s being fine-tuned, and sometimes it works so elegantly you don’t even notice you’re reading backstory and exposition. But sometimes it comes off clunky and ham-fisted. Sadly, I can’t always say I did it the first way.” In regards composing successful character narration, Symons remarks, “As with most things, it’s to be used sparingly. Brevity is the soul of wit. Pretty sure somebody really good said that.”

MercenarySea-02-pg3

“Mathew’s contributions can’t really be measured,” answers Kel Symons when asked about artwork drawn and coloured by Mathew Reynolds. “As much as anything, he is The Mercenary Sea – his unique art style defines it. I honestly can’t even imagine it looking any other way. Thank God I don’t have to. My comic book scripts are very detailed, but also very conversational documents. Sometimes I have a very clearly defined way of thinking a scene should look, which might run counter to what Mathew has in mind. It’s lead to a few disagreements, but like any good marriage, there’s compromise. I try not to get too nit-picky about getting things EXACTLY the way they are in my script, and Mathew respects my vision and trusts my judgement.”

MercenarySea-02-pg5

“Mathew stood out initially because I’d seen some Indiana Jones art he’d done that was all in silhouette; it really was stunning,” states Kel Symons. “The way he adds depth of field by keeping foreground and background images stacked, out of focus here and there – they’re like two-dimensional dioramas. One of my favourite examples of this is the cover for issue 2 with that Japanese Zero out of focus in the foreground. It’s simply amazing stuff. There are times when I insist he does a panel without that silhouette look, but he’s got great instincts and knows when to use them, and when not to. It adds a more cinematic flavour to what we’re doing, and I have encouraged him often to keep going with that, keep pushing the envelope. I had him add an artificial lens flare to a panel in #3 that really adds to the overall look. It looks very cool. Seriously, I can’t say enough great things about what Mathew’s doing with this art.”

MercenarySea_02

“Pat [Brosseau] brings something like 30 years of lettering experience to the table,” remarks Symons. “Worked on a lot of DC titles – and the man lettered Hellboy. Freakin’ Hellboy! He worked with me on I Love Trouble, my first Image title. When I came to him with The Mercenary Sea, he immediately grasped what we were going for, and wanted the lettering to be a bit more distinct – give it a European look. Starting with the third issue he’s gotten more involved with the book’s design and look, and helped us create our first letters column. Sebastian [Girner] came recommended to me by James Asmus, who’d worked with him before. James and I were talking about how strange it was from me, coming from Hollywood where pretty much everyone has an opinion about what you’re writing, to be working with Image which basically lets you do whatever you want with little or no creative control. It felt like I was working without a net not having someone give me notes on the pages I was churning out. It was freeing, and a little frightening so I really needed another opinion – someone who wasn’t afraid to tell me when I was headed down the wrong path on something. Sebastian is my safety net.”

MercenarySea-03-Page1

“Layout is pretty much all Mathew,” explains Kel Symons. “As I said, I write pretty detailed scripts, choreographing everything. But as long as it doesn’t interfere with the bigger picture, Mathew’s free to do as he pleases. One of my favourite moments like this comes in issue 3 page 9. I had a very definite idea of what I wanted from a panel, and instead he combined the action from a couple panels into one half splash and something great came of it. Honestly, it’s one of my favourite pages in the series so far. One contribution of mine to the overall look is adding those nautical charts as the background to our interior front covers. I love maps – probably goes back to reading The Hobbit, or playing D&D. I went around buying up vintage charts of the Pacific specifically for this. The issue titles are actually all pop song titles from the 1930s. I played around a little with the sixth issue title because it suited the story, but it was still based on a popular song. I have no idea if I’ll be able to keep it consistent, going 30-plus issues, but I’m going to try.”

MercenarySea-03-Pgae5

MercenarySea03-CoverEssential in marketing a comic book is having an effective cover. “First and foremost probably our logo – we worked long and hard on that,” notes Kel Symons. “First on coming up with a really great title for the series, and then branding it with a distinctive logo. The covers are all Mathew, too. I might have a say here or there, but essentially I told him I didn’t think they had to directly tie to the interior pages. Mathew has a free hand to come up with these great little action tableaus with our characters and setting; he does not disappoint, either.” Impactful stories can not be broken down into a standard formula. “It’s an alchemy that defies analysis and clear definition. I don’t think you can say: “I’ll mix one part action, with one part drama, sprinkle in some dry wit and jokes, and just a sprig of romance.” But yes, you’re right, the best stories have elements of all of those. I find that with the first draft of anything I write, it tends to come out with too much humour in it. Turns out I think I’m hilarious. Only I might be the only one. I often pare that back in later drafts. Focus on less jokey, more serious character beats. The drama, if you will.”

TheMercenarySea_04

“Action comes fairly easily for me, too, but oftentimes that’s added later after the dramatic backbone is in place,” states Kel Symons. “I’ve done it the other way round. Sometimes its action, action, action, and I have to step back, sift through the spent casings, blown up cars and broken bones to bring real dramatic character moments to the surface.” The Mercenary Sea is not about making social commentary. “I wish I could say I’m so completely aware of what I’m writing that I consciously include themes. I do with some of the things I write, but that’s not the situation here. I could tell you it’s about extended family, camaraderie through hardship, but the truth is I don’t set out with such lofty goals when I start a new script. The Mercenary Sea was only ever supposed to be a good time – an entertaining yarn. Therefore enjoyment is the only theme I’m looking to explore.” Symons adds, “I never pretended to be re-inventing the wheel, and The Mercenary Sea wasn’t intended to have some post-modern spin on the pulp adventure. Guess what? It is what it appears to be: a rollicking, swashbuckling tale of high adventure. But that’s not to say we won’t explore some deeper [and at times, darker] character moments. I have some stuff planned that, if we can pull it off, will definitely work towards that end.”

SYNOPSIS:

An ex-con, who is the unlikeliest of role models, meets a 15-year-old boy and is faced with the choice of redemption or ruin.

nicolas-cage-tye-sheridan-joe

The back woods of Austin, Texas. A place devastated by poverty, homelessness, and filled with an anger which can no longer be restrained. This is the setting for David Gordon Green’s naturalistic and excellent Joe, a film sadly tucked away on VOD but one which deserves a wide audience.

Gary (Ty Sheridan), a 15 year old boy, lives in an abandoned and condemned house with his mother, mute sister, and Wade, his abusive, drunk father. Gary is quickly becoming a man, leaving the innocence of youth far behind him as he looks for any work he can find to support his family and make something of himself. Whilst walking through the woods he stumbles across a group of men cutting down trees for cash; far from professional tree fellers, the men gather every day when the weather allows for it, as their leader Joe (Nicolas Cage) decides who gets work. He picks them up in his knackered truck and he drops them off. Joe is a man they look up to and respect, and soon Gary and Joe forge a relationship which has long been missing in the boy’s life.

The subtlety of the screenplay from Gary Hawkins (his debut feature film script) allows for the film to organically build on the foreboding sense of hopelessness and the unavoidable collision-course on which Joe, Gary, and Wade are on before the film begins. Joe is a masculine, aggressive, and heartbreaking study of a small group of men, isolate from the rest of the world and it moves at the pace of the location its set in; slow, unhurried, and never rushed. This isn’t a film where each scene exists to progress the plot, but often exist to coax the audience into this real world, but one which might seem alien to many viewers, such as myself.

The screenplay is paired with Green’s expert attention and obvious affection for the setting. Naturalism seeps through in every scene, whether it be Green’s hand held camera work, never flashy or showy yet often strikingly beautiful (he clearly evokes a Malick-like quality in his love of nature seen here and in Prince Avalanche and Snow Angels), or in the performances from all involved, from Oscar winning Nicolas Cage to non-professional street performers like Gary Poulter (as Wade) or the entire African American crew who work for Joe. The grounded subject matter allows for Cage to give his best performance by far since 2009’s Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans (breaking a streak of 9 sub-par movies) and his most restrained since World Trade Centre a year before. Watching Joe should remind those who think of Cage as a joke or whose career is just a collection of internet compilations taken out of context of the qualities he has when choosing the right material, something he hasn’t been doing for a few years. When the material is right, no one can touch him and I wouldn’t want to see anyone else in the lead role here.

After the film finished I had some slight reservations about the motivations of what Joe ends up doing in the second half of the film, but allow myself time to digest the film and think about Green and Hawkins’s way of telling this tale allowed me to see the film in a different way. It’s the fusion of surroundings and character which steers Joe into the path he takes, as if he is no longer in control of his own destiny but is saving Gary from making the same mistakes. The rage Joe has inside him is amassed from being a product of his environment, a broken, downtrodden soul who has no future outside of these woods. The same can be said of Wade and Willie-Russell, the man who is Joe’s nemesis in the picture stemming from a fight which broke out in a bar before the film begins; a fight which began, I assume, because the men wanted to fight. They needed to let out some anger one way or another.

Joe is, as you can gather, a firm favourite of mine this year. It’s a film which absolutely deserves to be seen and respected as much as Jeff Nichols’s similar Mud was last year and I hope it begins a resurgence of Nicolas Cage’s career because he more than deserves it, and we deserve more from him. Joe is an excellent way to start.

From Disney comes “Maleficent”—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic “Sleeping Beauty.” A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

Maleficent is set for release on May 30th with a cast that also includes Elle Fanning (Super 8), Sharlto Copley (Elysium), Imelda Staunton (The Pirates! Band of Misfits), Miranda Richardson (The Hours), Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises), and Lesley Manville (Romeo and Juliet). Watch the latest trailer here.

Johnny DeppIt seems that Kevin Smith has added a little A-list star power to his upcoming low-budget horror flick Tusk, with star Justin Long (Jeepers Creepers) revealing that Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean) has joined the cast.

According to The Wrap, Depp is “likely playing a French-Canadian inspector who investigates the bizarre case at the centre of the film” – which relates to Long’s character, a podcaster “who finds the story of a lifetime in Mr. Howe (Michael Parks), a worldwide adventurer with amazing tales and a curious penchant for walruses.”

In addition to Long and Red State star Parks, Tusk also features Genesis Rodriquez (The Last Stand) and Haley Joel Osmont (The Sixth Sense), along with Epic Meal Time’s Harley Morenstein. The film is set for release some time this year.

Tell Me, What’s the Purpose of Film Critics?

Commenting on the Critics with Simon Columb…

Sandra Bullock in GravityAlready a comment on critics, author Tom Shone (writer of the brilliant book Blockbuster: How the Jaws and Jedi Generation Turned Hollywood into a Boom-town) writes for The Guardian about the different approaches to film criticism highlighted in the past week:

“Hollywood needs policing on its weaknesses, not its strengths. And what is neglected in today’s film culture and could most do with lionization is the not the director’s art but the producer’s – that all-too-rare ability to corral together a loose, combustible, creative team required to draw the lightning strike of a great movie.”

Matt Zoller Seitz claims critics need to explain “where the camera goes” and crucially “why it goes there”, hinting at a more analytical, interpretive understanding of a film. Why does the camera float across space rather than cutting away in Gravity? Why does Steve McQueen hold still, as Chitewel Ejiofor balances precariously in the mud for an extended, uncomfortable amount of time in 12 Years a Slave? The sounds of his toes tapping on the mud beneath as the only sound we hear? This is opposed to Malcolm Thorndike Nicholson’s criticism that writers don’t often discuss “all those elements that a casual movie-goer is not likely to consciously register” such as lighting and sound. As you can see from above, Shone believes criticism is about holding filmmakers to account for their flaws. A meeting between producer, director and actor is the perfect storm that creates a high-quality film – a quality that is lacking in contemporary cinema.

In the first instance, these debates inspire and challenge. They provoke and take writers, and readers, back to the purpose of cinema-going and criticism itself. Cinema is a combination of various art forms while filmmakers are adept at capitalising on different skills to recreate or interpret a story. It is literature in the poetic and rap-like rhythm of dialogue in The Social Network or Glengarry Glen Ross. It is a painting on the wall – a visual feast of interpretation effortlessly shown in 2001: A Space Odyssey or Prometheus. Capture any frame from the entire film and pin it on the wall. It remains engaging and exciting. It is a biography or historical document, as Twenty Feet from Stardom or Captain Phillips draw attention to uncelebrated artists or reflect on our own sense of humanity.

By the same token, cinema can be interpreted and viewed with vastly different expectations. The age-old conflict as The Wolf of Wall Street is seen by one as a great film with sex, drugs and comedy – an escapist fantasy of excess viewers can experience for three hours. To others, it is a tragic story of the state of the capitalist world, highlighting the ever-growing divide between wealth and poverty. The same film but a different purpose for cinema.

Indeed, as criticism is considered by many as a dying art form in and of itself (and by extension, cinema itself could be dying) we need to expect better from our filmmakers. We need to respond to the concerns and issues that arise at the moment and what it says about us as viewer; as people of the world. As cinema is diverse, critics are too – but the reputation of film is at stake. As ardent film-goers and passionate appreciators of the arts, criticism needs to be a show of support – defining why The Act of Killing is a film every politician in the western world should watch. Criticism should be a deconstruction of Hollywood’s hidden agenda, a take-down of corrupted-attitudes towards gender, race and sexuality as dictated by blockbusters and family films. Film-goers are often unaware of these trends too. Critics are not merely placing an overview of techniques onto a page; they can use their vast knowledge of cinema to say what it says about us – and what it may say about the future…

Eight Predictions For The Marvel Cinematic Universe

$
0
0

Thomas Roach with eight predictions for the Marvel Cinematic Universe….

AvengersThrough years of planning and a chain of successes Marvel Studios has delivered films that both excel at the box office and please their fans. Unlike the other superhero movies, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has all these characters existing in the same universe and crossing over into each other’s films – this started with Iron Man back in 2008 and the standalone films led to the first Avengers film which saw these extraordinary characters team up.

The success is trying to be imitated by Warner Bros. with the DC cinematic universe and Fox who have ambitions of a shared universe between X-Men and Fantastic Four – the only Marvel properties they own. Marvel Studios has definitely got it right though where the others fail. It is a great time for Marvel Studios and there is no sign of this slowing down any time soon.

Their ambition seems to have no limit, and Marvel Studios are looking at making more unique projects. Guardians of the Galaxy is a rather obscure Marvel product but depending on its success this will open the Marvel Cinematic Universe to endless possibilities – bringing more obscure characters to the big screen will increase the output of films that Marvel produce each year. Marvel Studios has even suggested producing four films every year instead of just two – this would allow the Cinematic Universe to expand a far quicker than before and hopefully keep fans happy.

Marvel does seem to leave lots of hints and clues to the future of their film series as well as directly telling the audience its latest endeavors. Even years before the films are out fans like to talk about and guess what is going to happen. Fans now look out for cameos and stay after the credits to see the next teaser for Marvel’s future films. So, with that in mind, here are some predictions for future Marvel films…

Honourable Mention – The Red Skull is Thanos

cosmic-cubeThis is a highly unlikely prediction but due to the nature of the Red Skull’s last scene in Captain America: The First Avenger, there is some ambiguity to the fate of the character. In the final scene we see Red Skull hold the Tesseract with his bare hands before it starts to melt him. Until recently people assumed that Red Skull’s fate was clear, but after analysis of the scene, his fate is far more ambiguous. In the scene a portal opens up and before Red Skull gets obliterated we see a shot of space and the beam that presumably goes across the universe. The portal then stops, red Skull is no longer there and the Tesseract falls into the sea. What was the relevance of showing a portal into space? Maybe Red Skull got transported across the stars and across time? Is it possible that he was able to use his knowledge and power on a different world to become Thanos?

Of course the chances of this are slim to none, and the way the scene was shot may just be ambiguous for ambiguity’s sake. Maybe reading too much into the scene has led to think this crazy theory – and it is a crazy theory, however it was definitely worth mentioning. The Red Skull was reportedly in the first draft of The Avengers as a supporting villain to Loki. This was however cut out due to the fear of crowding the film with villains. This may mean that the Red Skull is still alive – even if he is not Thanos.

Hank Pym will appear in Age of Ultron

ant-man-croppedFor those of you who don’t know, Ant-Man will be the first Marvel Studios film to follow the highly anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron. Without a doubt, it will be a hard film to follow. If the box office success of The Avengers is anything to go by then Age of Ultron will do equally well and should even exceed its predecessor. Ant-Man is a far more obscure product in comparison to The Avengers. It would make sense for Marvel Studios to promote their next film by featuring a character from the next film – Hank Pym.

In the comics, Hank Pym is actually the creator of the Ultron, but this version it looks like Ultron will be Tony Stark’s creation. Joss Whedon said that Hank Pym would not appear in the Avengers sequel but that was a while ago – that may have changed. We all assumed that the lead of Ant-Man would be Pym but it looks like it will favor Scott Lang instead – with Pym in a supporting character role. So in a sense Ant-Man would not appear in the Avengers sequel, but Pym may do. Hank Pym is to be played by Michael Douglas and because the actor is older, this suggests that he was a superhero before – presumably one of the first superheroes. We can expect to see Hank Pym cameo in Age of Ultron.

Marvel seem to know what they are doing and always deliver great Easter eggs and after credit scenes to tease future films. If there is no cameo or even reference to Hank Pym in Avengers: Age of Ultron, then it would be a waste of a great opportunity to give a niche film more attention.

Thanos will destroy Asgard

thanos1For The Avengers 3, it looks like we will get Thanos as the main villain. Most fans are guessing this and are pretty sure this is where the films are leading to. Thanos is due to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy and he may get to demonstrate his powers to the audiences for the first time. He will not however have his weapon – The Infinity Gauntlet.

Thor 3 is due in Phase Three, likely in 2017, and this will probably be the final Marvel film before the third Avengers. In order to show Thanos’ power, he should be shown to destroy Asgard. As we saw in Thor, The Infinity Gauntlet is safely locked up in the relic vault in Asgard. If Thanos is to utilize the power he will need to get hold of it. It would be great to demonstrate how powerful the character is by destroying an entire world that we have seen a lot of in both Thor movies. Having an entire realm destroyed by a villain would be a good reason to ‘Avenge’.

Doctor Strange will be played by an older actor

doctor-strangeDoctor Strange is a certainty for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kevin Fiege has already talked about the film and its search for a director as well as rumors of casting the title role. It’s likely he will hit our screens in the 2016 slot, introducing us to magic and sorcery. Due to who the character is, it would make sense to have a seasoned actor play Strange rather than a younger actor. For those of you who don’t know the character’s origin, Stephen Strange is a highly skilled surgeon who is arrogant and loves money. After a car accident damages his hands and he can no longer perform surgery he searches for a way to heal his hands. Eventually he come across a Wizard in the Himalayas and after showing selflessness if given the title of Sorcerer Supreme.

Could you really see a twenty-something actor playing a world renowned surgeon? Older actors should be considered for the role.

Black Panther will not be introduced until Phase Four

Black-PantherStudio executives and fans alike want to see a Black Panther movie – many have called the film to fill one of the Phase Three slots. However despite the eagerness to have the character hit the big screen, from the look of things we will not have a Black Panther movie any time soon. There has been little discussion about casting to do with the film. Doctor Strange on the other hand has a shortlist of directors and casting rumors around it – Black Panther has nothing.

There is one slot left open for a Marvel film in Phase Three and the chances of Black Panther look slim. Rumours so far suggest that the final slot will be filled with a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel pending its success. And there are several black superheroes now in Falcon, War Machine and even Luke Cage who will appear on the Netflix series. War Machine, who is played by Don Cheadle, is set to appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron as a member of the team – something he missed out on before. Because of this there may be less pressure to diversify superheroes now.

Marvel chief Kevin Fiege did say a Black Panther movie will happen – he just doesn’t know when. Maybe Phase Four will pave the way for a standalone Black Panther movie, or  perhaps the character could feature in a Marvel One-Shot before becoming a member of the team in Avengers 3?

No Female Solo movie until Phase Four

2019-ms-marvelLike with Black Panther, the audience may not get a female superhero movie for quite some time. This could change in a heartbeat though, so fans wanting to see a female hero lead a film keep your fingers crossed. There is still a slot available for Marvel in 2017 and as of yet we have no idea what that film could be. There’s been rumours about a Guardians sequel, as well as a Ms. Marvel or Black Widow movie. Kevin Fiege has expressed a great deal of interest in a female solo movie and seems keen on the idea of having Black Widow carry a movie on her own. Fiege however also said that Marvel Studios has no intention to produce a female solo movie anytime soon.

With a roster of strong female characters Marvel Studios has the ability to develop a solo female superhero movie, but as of now they may deem it too risky. Black Widow is very much a supporting character and that has clearly been the case in all the films she has appeared it. She has gone through some decent development but still lacks something that could allow her to carry a feature film on her own merit.

A Ms. Marvel film has been rumored for a while but still the risk is too high. Guardians of the Galaxy is set to introduce Gamora who is a strong female character, albeit a supporting one at that. If she is well received by fans along with Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron, then a female solo superhero movie will likely be green lit. Until then though the male characters will continue to dominate our screens.

Hawkeye will be killed off/retire

Hawkeye_avengers_movie-500x260Without being harsh, Hawkeye seems to be the most useless Avenger. First of all he has no superpowers, which for a superhero team means he is quite boring. Secondly he got possessed by Loki in the first five minutes of The Avengers. Jeremy Renner says that we will get more back story to his character in Age of Ultron. That may be true but that certainly doesn’t mean the character is safe from being killed off. As the Avengers team increases, it is likely former members will be phased out. Age of Ultron is set to introduce Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and The Vision – War Machine is also set to appear, so that’s four new members now. Is the team becoming too crowded? Maybe they should kill or retire a character? From the reception of the character from fans, Hawkeye is the favourite candidate to leave the team.

While other characters may be on their way out of the team in the near future, Hawkeye will surely depart the team soon. Either retiring or killing off a character is the option. If Hawkeye were to die, it would be far more dramatic and allow the other characters to have some greater development. This could change instantly if the character is given a bigger role when we next see him in Avengers: Age of Ultron. From early reports this may be the case but due to the fact that the team is becoming crowded someone has to go.

Red Skull will return as a villain

red-skull-capRed Skull was obliterated by the Tesseract at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger, so we assume he is dead right? Well he was actually originally going to appear in the Avengers alongside Loki as an antagonist. In the universe in which these characters exist, the Red Skull is actually still alive. His ‘death’ was not as clear cut as the death of other villains in superhero movies.

Maybe the character is dead and won’t return but with the reappearance of Hydra to the series, there must be a good chance that the Red Skull will come back and get revenge on Captain America – maybe as the antagonist of Captain America 3? We already know that Baron Von Strucker will feature in Avengers: Age of Ultron – who is still running Hydra. Maybe Red Skull has just left a legacy, or maybe he will return.

Red Skull is Captain America’s arch rival so it would be good to see the character return. It would be interesting to see how he copes with the changes in the present day just as Steve Rogers has.

Steve Rogers will die and Bucky Barnes will become Captain America

Captain-America-Bucky-BarnesCaptain America: The Winter Soldier re-introduced us to Bucky Barnes in the form of The Winter Soldier. If you don’t remember, he was Steve Rogers’ friend and the commando who fell off the train to his assumed death in The First Avenger, but Barnes survived and was turned into the Soviet super-spy of the sequel’s title. The post-credits scene of The Winter Soldier reveals that he survives his ordeal with Captain America and seems to remember who he is and how he knows him – it would appear that The Winter Soldier is going to become a good guy. In fact he may become the next Captain America.

In the comics when Steve Rogers is assassinated by Brock Rumlow, a.k.a. Crossbones, Barnes then takes over the role of Captain America. With the fact that Chris Evans said he wants to take a break from acting after his Marvel contract ends and Sebastian Stan (who plays The Winter Soldier) has a nine-picture deal with Marvel, it seems apparent that he will take over from Chris Evans. This is also supported by the fact that Crossbones (Frank Grillo) survives the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier and will likely return in the next instalment as a villain.

It may just be a prediction but the way things are going the chances of Barnes becoming Captain America is a certainty – whether or not Steve Rogers will die for this to happen is another story. Recently Chris Evans has confirmed that he is to retire from acting and go into directing. With a new career prospect and no reason to sign a new contract, chances are Barnes will replace Rogers in the not too distant future.

What do you make of these predictions, and how do you think the Marvel Cinematic Universe will shape up over the next few years?

James Cameron offers updates on his three Avatar sequels

AvatarFor the past couple of years, James Cameron has been busy hammering away at development on a trio of sequels to the 2009 mega-blockbuster Avatar, working with screenwriters Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Shane Salerno (Savages), and Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) to perfect the scripts for the follow-ups to the highest-grossing film of all time.

Speaking during a Reddit AMA, Cameron has offered up an update on Avatar 2, 3 and 4, stating that: “The second, third and fourth films all go into production simultaneously. They’re essentially all in preproduction now, because we are designing creatures, settings, and characters that span all three films. And we should be finished with all three scripts within the next, I would say, six weeks.”

Cameron also went on to discuss how the success of Avatar led to a change in plans with regards to his focus as a filmmaker:

“My intention when I made Avatar was to do Battle Angel next. However, the positive feedback for Avatar and the support of the message of Avatar, encouraged me to do more of those films. For me, the success was a factor because I was encouraged by the fact that an environmental film, or a film about nature, could be successful. It’s certainly not just about money. I’m considering success to mean the measure of the ability of the film to communicate. Every director wants their film to communicate. The biggest factor, however, is the drive to continue developing the world– more characters, more creatures with unfettered creativity.”

Avatar 2 is set to hit in December 2016 followed by Avatar 3 in December 2017 and Avatar 4 in December 2018 with Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), Zoe Saldana (Neytiri) and Stephen Lang (Colonel Quaritch) all confirmed to return.

Batman vs. SupermanAs is becoming customary with superhero movies, it seems UK moviegoers will get to see The Dark Knight and the Man of Steel joining forces on the big screen slightly earlier than Batman vs. Superman’s planned North American release date of May 6th 2016.

According to Launching Films (via CBM), Warner Bros.’ Man of Steel sequel will hit UK cinemas a week earlier on April 29th. That brings it away from Marvel’s Captain America 3, although you’d have to assume based upon Marvel Studios’ past release pattern that Cap’s third solo outing will arrive a little earlier on these shores too.

Batman vs. Superman is directed by Zack Snyder and sees returning Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill (Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent) and Laurence Fishburne (Perry White) joined by Ben Affleck (Argo) as Batman, Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) as Wonder Woman, Jesse Eisenberg (Now You See Me) as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons (The Borgias) as Alfred Pennyworth and Holly Hunter (The Piano), Callan Mulvey (300: Rise of an Empire), and Tao Okamoto (The Wolverine) in as-yet-unrevealed roles.
