Safety Not Guaranteed, 2012

Directed by Colin Trevorrow.
Starring Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass and Jake Johnson.

SYNOPSIS:

A journalist and his two interns investigate a 'time travel partner wanted' advert that appears in a newspaper.

WANTED: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You'll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. Safety not guaranteed.

It's a hell of a gamble applying to an advert like that. If it's genuine, you're exploring scientific unknowns. If it's fake, then you'll probably end up locked in some guy's basement with only his mother's corpse for company. Stuff escalates like that.

Safety Not Guaranteed attempts to answer this age-old conundrum. Our three adventurers are magazine writer Jeff (Jake Johnson) and his two interns, Darius (Aubrey Plaza) and Arnau (Karan Soni). Or, in Jeff's words, "the lesbian and the Indian."

Their subject is Kenneth (Mark Duplass), a socially maladjusted man who's convinced he's invented the means for time travel. He's intensely paranoid of the government discovering his plans and is alarmingly adept with a handgun (see: "Must bring your own weapons"). He also has a fake ear.

The fake ear is one of the movie's many oddities. But it's a film about time travel, of course it's going to have oddities, you say. First off - who ever said it's a film about time travel? If anything, this is a movie about regret, remorse, nostalgia, guilt and holiday romances. It's about wanting to go back to a time in your life where everything was perfect, and to in some way prevent the thing that threw it all off track. Sure, it uses the feasibility of time travel to explore those themes, but it isn't about the science fiction staple itself. Just like how Gremlins isn't about gremlins. (It's about the rotting core of American innovation.)

Secondly, it's not that kind of 'oddity.' It's one, from a reflexive standpoint, that seems to be wholly without consequence in the narrative's grander scheme. Jeff, for instance, wants to revisit an old holiday romance (a form of time travel, trying to recapture the past). The subplot trails off like cigar smoke and remains unresolved by the credits roll. So does the ear. It's mentioned once as a semi-serious piece of character development (Kenneth was bullied about it at school), and then left alone.

There's a dramatic principle called Chekhov's gun, where the Russian playwright stated that if a rifle is hanging on the wall in the first act, it must be fired by the second or third. He wasn't a fan of surplus fake ears. Safety Not Guaranteed is full of them, and endearingly so. It's inherited from the filmmakers involved and their beginnings in Mumblecore. Elements of life simply drift in and then out, not adhering to the stuffy literary giant's neat little views.

This gives Safety Not Guaranteed a tremendous intimacy, which allows for serious themes to be explored through adults training for time travel. This dialectic is encapsulated in a wonderful moment, another one of Chekhov's crumbs, where Kenneth tells Darius about his Star Wars toys, and how he used to hide them in the woods.

Because then you realise that nothing's changed. He's just playing with different toys. Only with a higher degree of radioactivity and a flux capacitor.

Non-Stop knocks The LEGO Movie from the top of the North American box office
After three weeks atop the US box office, The LEGO Movie has been removed by Liam Neeson action thriller Non-Stop and Christian blockbuster Son of God.

Non-Stop stands in first place with an opening weekend of $30 million, beating Son of God by  $3.5 million. The religious blockbuster earned $4 million alone in advance ticket sales. In a similar manner to Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, organised trips helped the film to pull in a solid $26.5 million.

The LEGO Movie moved past the $200 million mark and has already earned  $330 million worldwide. Meanwhile, the rereleased Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues opened in 1317 theaters in the US, pulling in $1,335,000.

Nikolaj-Coster Waldau’s Jaime Lannister didn’t exactly have an easy trip during season 3 of HBO’s groundbreaking Game of Thrones, and in the latest issues of Total Film, Coster-Waldau has spoken briefly about his role in the upcoming fourth season:

"I really liked the fact the the Prince Charming hair is gone, although I miss the mud to be honest. But one of the great things about being on the show is that it changes and you get to do different things every year."

Without a hand and a newfound respect for people, it will be intriguing to see how Jaime's character develops when Game of Thrones returns to HBO for its fourth season from April 6th.

Hugh Jackman says it's inevitable Fox will recast Wolverine

With the release of X-Men: Days of Future Past this May, Hugh Jackman will have made seven appearances as Wolverine, and while talking to IGN, the star has discussed his time as the clawed hero, and whether he thinks Fox had given any consideration to recasting the role of Logan, particularly with a younger actor for 2011's X-Men: First Class...

"I’m sure they had the discussion. They didn’t mention it to me, obviously! Look, that’s inevitable, man. Anyone who thinks they're indispensable in this business is fooling themselves. But I feel unbelievably blessed to have this part. I never thought in a million years I'd get to play him seven times. Every day I walk on the set with the claws and the hair, I thank my lucky stars. I don't take any of it for granted. To think that in a second version we'd have this cast and this director, and you guys don’t know the script, but I would say probably the best script of all of them, is pretty amazing. I think that's why I'm still here. I'm sure by the way, that it won't always be my decision to always be here. At some point, someone will close the door on me."

Presumably, Jackman will reprise his role in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, but beyond that remains to be seen. Would you rather they stuck with Jackman, or is it time the character was recast? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or head on over to The Flickering Myth Forum...

X-Men: Days of Future Past is set for release on May 23rd with a cast that also includes James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Lucas Till (Havok), Halle Berry (Storm), Anna Paquin (Rogue), Ellen Page (Kitty Pryde) and Shawn Ashmore (Iceman) alongside franchise newcomers Evan Peters (American Horror Story) as Quicksilver, Booboo Stewart (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) as Warpath, Fan Binbing (Iron Man 3) as Blink, Adan Canto (The Following) as Sunspot, Josh Helman (Mad Max: Fury Road) as William Stryker, Evan Jonigkeit (Girls) as Toad, and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as Bolivar Trask.

Zack Snyder responds to Watchmen criticism, says he "made it to save it from the Terry Gilliams of this world"

Zack Snyder made Watchmen "to save it from the Terry Gilliams of this world"Last week producer Joel Silver (Lethal Weapon, Non-Stop) spoke about his previous plans to bring Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' seminal comic book tale Watchmen to the screen, during which he stated that his and Terry Gilliam's (Brazil, The Zero Theorem) adaptation would have been "MUCH better" than what we ultimately got from Zack Snyder in 2009 [read Silver's comments here]. Well, Snyder has now taken a break from publicity on 300: Rise of an Empire and pre-production on the Man of Steel sequel Batman vs. Superman to fire back at Silver stating that he made his version of the movie "to save it from the Terry Gilliams of this world."

"It's funny because the biggest knock against the movie is that we finally changed the ending, right? And if you read the Gilliam ending, it's completely insane [or, as Deborah Snyder interjects - "The fans would have been thinking that they were smoking crack"]. The fans would have stormed the castle on that one. So, honestly, I made Watchmen for myself. It's probably my favorite movie that I've made. And I love the graphic novel and I really love everything about the movie. I love the style. I just love the movie and it was a labor of love. And I made it because I knew that the studio would have made the movie anyway and they would have made it crazy. So, finally I made it to save it from the Terry Gilliams of this world."

Snyder then commented on the criticism levied against his adaptation for remaining too faithful to the source material, stating that, "That's the problem with comic book movies and genre. And I believe that we've evolved -- I believe that the audiences have evolved. I feel like Watchmen came out at sort of the height of the snarky Internet fanboy -- like, when he had his biggest strength. And I think if that movie came out now -- and this is just my opinion -- because now that we've had "Avengers" and comic book culture is well established, I think people would realize that the movie is a satire. You know, the whole movie is a satire. It's a genre-busting movie. The graphic novel was written to analyze the graphic novel -- and comic books and the Cold War and politics and the place that comic books play in the mythology of pop culture. I guess that's what I'm getting at with the end of Watchmen -- in the end, the most important thing with the end was that it tells the story of the graphic novel. The morality tale of the graphic novel is still told exactly as it was told in the graphic novel -- I used slightly different devices. The Gilliam version, if you look at it, it has nothing to do with the idea that is the end of the graphic novel. And that's the thing that I would go, 'Well, then don't do it.' It doesn't make any sense. f you love the graphic novel, there's just no way. It would be like if you were doing Romeo and Juliet and instead of them waking up in the grave area, they would have time-traveled back in time and none of it would have happened."

So are you happy with Snyder's Watchmen, or would you have preferred to see what Silver and Gilliam could have come up with? Let us know in the comments below or head on over to The Flickering Myth Forum...

Two motion posters for The Amazing Spider-Man 2

We've seen an awful lot of promotional material for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 over the past few weeks, but it seems like Sony's marketing department is showing no signs of slowing down, with two new motion posters arriving online, which you can check out below courtesy of ComicBookMovie. In fairness, these are pretty neat....

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for release on April 18th 2014 in the UK and on May 1st 2014 in North America, with a cast that includes returning stars Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker / Spider-Man) Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy), Sally Field (Aunt May), Chris Zylka (Flash Thompson), Campbell Scott (Richard Parker), Embeth Davidtz (Mary Parker), Martin Sheen (Ben Parker) and Denis Leary (George Stacy) alongside new additions Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained) as Electro, Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) as Harry Osborn, Paul Giamatti (12 Years a Slave) as The Rhino, Chris Cooper (American Beauty) as Norman Osborn, Colm Feore (Thor) as Donald Menken, Marton Csokas (The Lord of the Rings) as Dr. Kafka, B.J. Novak (The Office) as Alistair Smythe, and Felicity Jones (Like Crazy) and Sarah Gadon (Cosmopolis) in as yet unrevealed roles.

Cardiff's Doctor Who Experience is to be updated later this year with Peter Capaldi expected to shoot a new adventure for the interactive attraction.

Currently, the “adventure” revolves around Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor but this is to come to an end in Autumn of 2014, when it will be shut for six weeks, allowing time for the switchover to occur.

Thankfully, only the “Experience” will be shut, with the museum aspects staying open for the foreseeable future. Of course, this won’t be news for fans of the series but it does mean that we may get a sneak peek at Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor before the new series starts later in the year.

Penny Dreadful character images and descriptions

Thanks to IGN, we've got a batch of character images and descriptions for Showtime's upcoming "psychosexual thriller" series Penny Dreadful, which has been created by screenwriter John Logan (Hugo, Gladiator, Skyfall), with Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road, Call the Midwife) producing...

Eva Green (Casino Royale, 300: Rise of an Empire) as Vanessa Ives - Poised, mysterious and utterly composed, Vanessa is a seductive and formidable beauty full of secrets and danger. She is keenly observant -- clairvoyant even -- as well as an expert medium. Her supernatural gifts are powerful and useful to those around her, particularly Sir Malcolm, but they are also a heavy burden. Her inner demons are very real to her and everyone around her, and they threaten to destroy her relationships, her sanity, and her very life.

Timothy Dalton (The Living Daylights, License to Kill) as Sir Malcolm Murray - A hardened African explorer on a deeply personal quest, Sir Malcolm has nonetheless paid a heavy price for his exciting career. Although his stately home is filled with marvelous souvenirs of his travels, it is devoid of family and loved ones.  With Vanessa's help, he is determined to right the wrongs of his past, but his toughest journey lies ahead.

Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down, Sin City) as Ethan Chandler - A charming American who finds himself trapped in the darkest corners of Victorian London, Ethan's charm and brash ways are catnip to the ladies. When Sir Malcolm enlists him to help in a personal quest, Ethan meets Brona Croft, a beautiful local with a mysterious past. But behind Ethan's bright eyes lurk dark secrets. He is running from something, and his troubling past threatens to overtake him at every turn.

Reeve Carney (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) as Dorian Gray - Dorian Gray is a fabulously wealthy young gentleman who is almost unnerving in his beauty. His skin seems to radiate a golden glow of intoxicating youth and promise. A recklessly abandoned aesthete, he has a devil-may-care attitude that borders on dangerous. Nothing seems to faze him, nor are any risks too great. In fact, he is unnaturally drawn to them.

Billie Piper (Doctor Who, Secret Diary of a Call Girl) as Brona Croft - Brona is a poor Irish immigrant to Victorian London trying to escape a dark and sordid past. The Gaelic meaning of her name is "sadness," yet she remains lovely, spirited, and erotically alive. She forms a bond with Ethan Chandler, who will do anything for her.

Harry Treadaway (Cockneys vs. Zombies, The Lone Ranger) as Dr. Victor Frankenstein - More Romantic poet than surgeon, Dr. Frankenstein is a tender, gentle soul who is fascinated by the mysteries of life and death. He has dedicated himself to researching what makes something live, and has sacrificed everything for his scientific pursuit. But he is playing with fire, and his research pays off in shocking ways with devastating consequences.

Danny Sapani (Misfits, Trance) as Sembene - Sembene is an African man with ritual face scarring who serves as Sir Malcolm's sentry and confidant. He has an air of mystery about him and his heroic efforts will prove invaluable to Sir Malcolm in his personal quest.

Penny Dreadful is set to get underway on Showtime on May 11th.

Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder on Batman vs. Superman leaks and casting criticism

$

Since the big news at last year's Comic-Con that The Dark Knight will join the Man of Steel for the upcoming DC Comics superhero spectacular Batman vs. Superman, we've had to suffer through wave after wave of rumours concerning everything from the casting of Batman and Lex Luthor through to the inclusion of virtually every DC character under the sun, most of which proved to have very little substance about them.

However, while Warner Bros. has done an effective job keeping details of the Man of Steel sequel under wraps, that didn't stop the Comic-Con announcement from leaking online just hours before Zack Snyder took to the stage to reveal that he's bringing the two iconic superheroes together on screen. So, how does the director feel about that, and leaks in general?

"[The leak] was definitely not a planned thing," Snyder tells The Huffington Post during a promotional interview for 300: Rise of an Empire. "The leak becomes the audience involvement. They are now part of it, the process. Do you know what I mean? And you have to take that as the world we live in, as opposed to 'Oh, that's too bad.' That's fun for us when we're able to announce Jesse Eisenberg to the audience [and nobody saw it coming]."

Snyder's wife and producing partner Deborah then went into detail about her feelings on the matter, stating, "Things get leaked so often these days, it's a shame because even casing announcements, or whatever, you're in the middle of a process and sometimes they're so off base -- and then it gets picked up by multiple places and it's all over the place. Or some of it, you're just having conversations, but that doesn't mean they are a contender, but you're just exploring and it gets made public. It's kind of a shame that you can't go through the process in a pure way and then be able to announce it in a way that's exciting.

"With the [Comic-Con] announcement, there was rumblings and we were like, 'aw', because we wanted to bring it to the fans" she continues. "We wanted to bring them something special. We went to Comic-Con for "Watchmen" and we were bringing the cast to announce it and it got leaked a couple of days before. We wanted to give that to them and we got cheated out of it."

Meanwhile, speaking to Hero Complex, the director spoke about the reaction to the casting of Batman vs. Superman: "We know the material. Unfortunately, the fans don’t know the material. So, we’re casting according to what’s happening in the script. I understand the canon. I’m not crazy. I know what these characters need from a mythological standpoint. I think Jesse is going to be an amazing Lex. Let’s not forget he was nominated for an Academy Award. It’s not like I just grabbed my friend to play the guy! This guy’s the real deal. By the way, in looking at all the talk-back, you can get all different perspectives in there too. Some people are hating to hate. Some people — someone did some fan art... [The movie] literally takes the Man of Steel and Batman universes and explodes them... But when you think about how fun it is too — now that you’ve got these characters — to now let ‘em loose. That’s fun!"

Batman vs. Superman is set for release on May 6th 2016 with a cast that includes Henry Cavill (Clark Kent / Superman), Ben Affleck (Bruce Wayne / Batman), Gal Gadot (Diana Prince / Wonder Woman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White) and Jeremy Irons (Alfred Pennyworth).

Special Features - In Memory of John Candy

Tom Jolliffe remembers John Candy...

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of comedic legend, John Candy. One of Canada’s most successful film and TV exports, Candy rose through the TV comedy circuit in Canada alongside contemporaries like Rick Moranis, Harold Ramis (sadly no longer with us now), Catherine O’Hara and Eugene Levy. Throughout his film career, Candy would continue working on and off with many of the stars he rose with.

Candy has remained a popular figure, both among the audiences who grew up in the 80’s on a staple diet of his comedy films, and from new audiences who rediscover such greats as Planes, Trains and Automobiles. What really made Candy stand out, more than just his physical size and presence, was the warmth and likeability the man projected in virtually every character he played. Often playing the bumbling fool with his heart in the right place, Candy was effortlessly amiable as a character (and by most accounts, as a man). It’s incredibly difficult to not find a Candy character anything but endearing and his gift for projecting such warmth is something very few actors are able to do. Some, like Adam Sandler for example, try to force it, but it comes off, many times insincere.

As a comedian Candy had an ability to be constantly amusing without resorting to extreme physical and facial contortions. He was known to ad lib too, with a quick wit that would help him occasionally steal the movie in some of his less substantial roles. His role in Home Alone comes to mind as Candy’s character Gus Polinski tells Mrs McCallister (Catherine O’Hara) a slightly disturbing, harrowing tale that’s actually misguidedly supposed to be cheering her up. Candy would often find himself cast in supporting roles. He was an actor graced with an ability to have maximum impact, even on minimum screen time. However he could comfortably carry a movie in the headlining role too. Notable favourites include Uncle Buck (his work with John Hughes was very consistent), The Great Outdoors, Cool Runnings and Who’s Harry Crumb.

Perhaps one aspect of Candy’s career might be deemed unfulfilled and that is his dramatic capabilities. Apart from being effortlessly funny, Candy was a good actor. Films like Uncle Buck and Planes, Trains and Automobiles remain as popular as they are because amid the (brilliant) gags, there is heart and Candy projects this just as effortlessly as the comedy. He would appear in JFK in a straight role in the tail end of his career, but for the vast majority of his work, he resided in the comedy genre. It would certainly be unfair for Candy not to be considered a good actor.

So with 20 years having passed since cinema lost a somewhat under-appreciated great, dig out your favourite Candy film in memory. There have been few like him since his passing.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. showrunners promise more big Marvel superhero guest stars

One of the main criticisms levied towards Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been the lack of guest stars from both the Marvel Cinematic and comic book universes, although the producers of the show appear to be making steps to rectify that, having give a debut to the cyborg superhero Deathlok, as well as gearing up to deliver a Sif-centric episode, with Jaimie Alexander reprising her role from Thor and Thor: The Dark World.

Speaking to Comic Book Resources, showrunners Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon responded to a question asking if Deathlok is the biggest superhero character the show will ever feature, with the duo promising that even bigger names are on the horizon:

"If they're excited about Deathlok, then they should be excited about the things to come....We have some other very fun guest stars in the pipeline," said Tancharoen, with Whedon adding: " We're in a weird spot, because if the character is big and cool enough, then they're probably planning a movie. [Laughs] We have a fairly large list of characters that we have at our disposal, and we plan on exploring all of them."
