Well, it's hardly an extravaganza, but rather a short thank you...

Yes, it's our fifth birthday today, and as we cut into our cake here at Flickering Myth, I just wanted to say a big thank you to our fabulous writing team for their continued hard work and commitment, and of course our lovely readers, who've helped the site grow beyond anything I ever expected that it could be back in 2009 when I fancied writing an article on the box office chances of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Watchmen.

It's been another great twelve months for the site, and we've got some exciting plans in the pipeline which will hopefully mean that Year Six is even better, but before then, I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate this milestone by looking back on our five most popular articles on Flickering Myth...

5. Mel Gibson's beefed up new look for his role as bad guy Conrad Stonebanks in the upcoming action sequel The Expendables 3 - see here.

4. Skyfall overtaking The Dark Knight Rises to become the (then) 007th highest-grossing film of all time - see here.

3. Jeremy Renner rumoured to be out as Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (which of course has since been proven false) - see here.

2. Anghus Houvouras enraging Watchman fans everywhere with 'The Five Most Disappointing Films of All Time', a.k.a. 'The Article That Enraged Watchman Fans Everywhere' - see here.

And in at number one, with a whopping 400,000+ pageviews...

1. Samuel L. Jackson accidentally confirms that Elizabeth Olsen is set to play The Scarlet Witch in The Avengers: Age of Ultron - see here. Wow. Marvel really is popular!

Well, that's it... I'm off to enjoy this cake...

True Detective - Episode 1 Review

True Detective - Episode 1 Review
One of the keys to making great art is making something different to what’s come before. You must adhere to the most basic principles of your chosen form, but with everything being bought into context, you have to show your audience something new.

Not to get all high-end and snooty about things. While what’s been said above isn’t exactly bourgeoisie (although just typing the word ‘bourgeoisie’ makes me want to beat myself up), every art form also needs the nitty gritty little things to get by. Everything must come together to at least be a twist on what you’ve seen before.

One of the first things you might notice about True Detective is the high-end production values; in even it’s opening credits. No simple ‘stars, created by, show title’ quick chute into things, True Detective wants you to stay still and watch carefully, as it patiently tells you what it thinks you should know.

It takes place in a Louisiana populated by a diverse range of people, but with a feeling in the air of intense pressure. It feels like this police force are pushed by the public, as opposed to being in service to them. This is a place where if the real culprit isn’t captured, it wouldn’t be too far to think they’d grab the closest thing to.

Out to stop an elusive serial killer, we’re presented with the past and present images of Detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson). While the prospect of travelling from past to present is sometimes used as a gimmick (and sometimes done badly) True Detective blends this form of storytelling seamlessly to the point where it doesn’t matter. It simply helps tell the story.

Proper applause should be given to those with the job of giving McConaughey and Harrelson their looks of past and present. Some actors look as if they’ve been caked in make-up, bad wigs, CGI or a mixture of all three, but like all things in this episode the ideas are kept simple. Again, the point of these things isn’t so we marvel at the job done, but that we don’t even notice.

Something I did notice, however, is the seemingly strict adherence to the rule of the grim. With visuals similar to another great series, Hannibal, shocking images are laid out on screen. While it gives the serial killer a strange kink and gives our detectives plenty to look at in terms of potential clues, it seems like almost every show with a detective as a protagonist needs a horrible image to stick in your mind, because great storytelling isn’t enough.

What’s more interesting is the two main characters, stuck in the middle with each other. It’s part buddy-cop, part carer-child. Cohle, a man who sticks out so much even his name is a rare spelling of a more common name, does his thing. He chases up cases his way, while Hart sometimes tidies, sometimes chides. Will Martin Hart, the self-admitted everyday normal guy who sees life in seemingly simpler terms, continue to be a representation of us the audience? I can’t help but think with Woody Harrelson given the role, he’ll be given more to do than chase after Rust Cohle’s ‘wacky’ antics.

Another old thing made new, is the way audiences eyes are drawn more to one character than the other. It helps having one reactionary character sat next to one who creates their own actions. While people may strangely like to think they’re closer to the more obviously interesting Cohle, not many people are like George Carlin if he’d joined the police force. His attempts to wax lyrical about his philosophy comes across as part-enlightened meditation, part-child stumbling over growing limbs. And for once, this is a detective who does things his own way without going out of his way to break the rules (see Elementary, The Following, any show where the tagline includes the words ‘plays by his own rules’).

There’s a true darkness that lies somewhere within some of the characters’ souls, as opposed to the more artificial darkness shoved in your face by other shows. Darkness within characters and the moral ambiguity of everyone isn’t made out to be a big thing, at least so far (as much as I gush, this is only episode one). It’s more about how these two characters connected with each other and what really happened with their relationship.

In so many ways, True Detective seems like it has the potential to overtake every cop show around in an instant, because of a calmness letting us in on the confidence of those involved in the production. This episode doesn’t try to take you on a rollercoaster ride, it just sits back and lets you squirm without realising. And without anyone else realising it was there, True Detective has discovered the new within this oversubscribed genre. Which is probably what you’ve read about every cop show coming out of America, but that just makes True Detective even better, doesn’t it?

Another Shrek sequel in the works as Far Far Away Adventure theme park heads to London
Although the Shrek franchise fell from grace with its later instalments, the series still banked over $2.5 billion at the box office and DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg looks like he wants to revisit the Kingdom of Far Far Away. In an interview with the Fox Business Network, Katzenberg revealed,

“We like to let them have a little bit of time to rest. But I think you can be confident that we’ll have another chapter in the Shrek series. We’re not finished, and more importantly, neither is he."

Meanwhile, DreamWorks is to build a visitor attraction on the South Bank in London. Shrek's Far Far Away Adventure will open in Summer 2015 and will partnered with a new interactive adventure with Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Puss in Boots, and a plethora of other characters from the franchise, as well as Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon.

Gary Oldman and Benedict Cumberbatch reportedly cast in Star Wars: Episode VII, Harrison Ford rumoured for two more Indiana Jones movies

According to MarketSaw, Gary Oldman (RoboCop, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Star Trek Into Darkness) have signed onto star in the new Star Wars trilogy beginning with 2015's Star Wars: Episode VII.

Last month, Oldman confirmed he’d had “conversations” with Lucasfilm but never indicated if he would be taking on a role. The site continues by “confirming” Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher’s return, along with Billy Dee Williams, Ian McDiarmid, and Warwick Davies. Meanwhile, the report also claims that Harrison Ford has signed on to appear in TWO more Indiana Jones movies as part of his deal to return as Han Solo.

Once again, any Star Wars casting rumours could be nothing but speculation and until Abrams comes out and announces the cast, this should be taken with an incredibly large pinch of salt. However it should be noted that MarketSaw has proven reliable in the past...

House of Cards Season 2 - Episode 11 Review

Jackson Ball reviews the eleventh episode of House of Cards season 2....

House of Cards Season 2 poster
They’ve done it again! Those crafty House of Cards writers have blindsided us again with another unexpected plot device. Just as Episode 11 was looking to be a little on the dreary side, they pull out sharp, dialogue-free twist in its final scenes.

Spoilers Ahead – You have been warned!

Episode 11 chugs along at the usual slow pace, weighing itself down with as much political jargon as you could possibly care to want. Frank (Kevin Spacey) and Claire (Robin Wright) accumulate an abnormally low amount of screen-time between them, at least in the episode’s first ‘act’. Instead, the emphasis is once again pushed on the relationships of the supporting cast, and how they are all inevitably doomed.

First there’s the sex-for-secrets relationship between House Whip Jackie (Molly Parker) and professional scandal-starter Remy (Mahershala Ali). I don’t think anyone envisioned this one having a happy ending, and while we’ve been left questioning Remy’s motives, it seems as though their fornicating days are numbered.
Then there’s the hot/cold/ever-so-creepy relationship between Doug (Michael Kelly) and young Rachel (Rachel Brosnahan). What began as a good-intentioned attempt to keep her safe (entwined with the not so good-intentioned attempt to protect Frank) has gradually turned into something that resembles a borderline-obsession.  There’s always been something a little bit askew with Doug’s feelings towards Rachel - the bedtime stories alone were genuinely disturbing – but it looks as though she has finally had enough of his bossiness. It will be interesting to see who snaps first in upcoming episodes.

As we prepared to sign off on another relatively uneventful episode, Frank and Claire burst back into the picture with one of their most memorable scenes to date. It begins at an unnerving tempo, as Claire offers off-the-clock bodyguard Meechum (Nathan Darrow) a glass of wine. Time lapses onward and the pair are clearly getting a little tipsy, setting the scene for what we assume is Claire’s latest affair. That is until Frank joins them. There’s a beat; a silence. Then Claire makes her move, taking Meechum’s hand and kissing it, followed by his lips. Meechum then turns to Frank and they too share passionate kiss before the scene fades to black.

It may not be as dramatic a shock as the first episode, but it has the same mind-boggling effect. It is undeniably out of the blue, and will no doubt lead to you exclaiming profanities of confusion at the screen, but the real joy of this twist comes when you have had time for it to sink in.

Of course they’re having a threesome with Meechum!

We know Claire has been feeling lonely of late, what with the Adam scandal and the threats on her life, and we know that the Underwoods have never been entirely straight-laced in their attitude towards sex (Open about affairs, open about porn). Once again the writers have struck us with something we never would have predicted, but something that we’ll kick ourselves for not predicting! I mean, it’s just genius isn’t it?

Special Features - Harold Ramis (1944 - 2014)

Luke Owen remembers Harold Ramis...

You only have to listen to the Tinsel Town Stiffs section of Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman's Hollywood Babble On to know that not a week goes by where the entertainment industry doesn't lose one of its stars. This year alone we have seen tragic loses in James Avery and Philip Seymour Hoffman and yesterday we lost one of the true greats in comedy of the last few decades. On February 24th 2014, Harold Ramis passed away at the age of 69. We lost one entertainment's brightest stars.

When you look back at the great comedies of the 1980s, Ramis' name crops up again and again. Caddyshack. Groundhog Day. National Lampoon's Vacation. Stripes. The list goes on. Whether he worked on the project as a writer, actor or director, his legacy of work is hard to deny as anything other than stellar. You never really appreciate what an impact a person has on the industry until their passing, but the amount of heart-felt tweets and messages from fans and colleagues alike spoke volumes. He has been created as a "genius", "gifted" and "brilliant". Dan Aykroyd called him a "teacher", Bill Murray said that he had "earned his keep on this planet". Chevy Chase has said that his legendary performance of Clark Griswold was nothing more than an impression of Ramis' idea of the character. The likes of Judd Apatow, The Farrelly Brothers and Adam Sandler have all said that Ramis was an inspiration for them to work in comedy. Last night I spoke with Christian James and Dan Palmer of zombie-comedy Stalled who both spoke of how Ramis' work influenced their own.

And of course, it seems sadly poetic that Harold Ramis passed away in the year of perhaps his most successful franchise's 30th Anniversary.

While he leaves an impressive body of work, Ramis will always be remembered for playing Dr. Egon Spengler in the 1984 comedy classic Ghostbusters. Once the news broke about his passing, it seemed every news story printed used a picture of Ramis in the iconic role and almost all social media output from fans has been geared towards the performance. Today the Hook and Ladder 8 firehouse, which served as the Ghostbusters' HQ in the movie, put up the Ghostbusters II logo as it appeared in the film in remembrance and fans around New York have stopped by to leave flowers, pictures and even Twinkie bars as they mourn the loss. It's a testament to how great Ramis is in the role and the impact the movie had on a generation.

What many people forget is just how much Ramis changed and influenced the direction of Ghostbusters. Before he came on board, Dan Aykroyd's script featured himself and John Belushi travelling through time and space fighting ghosts with the likes Mr. Stay Puft making an appearance on page 13 as just a regular bad guy. What Ramis and director Ivan Reitman did was take Aykroyd's idea and use a tried and tested comedic method to make it better - ground it in reality and put ordinary people in extraordinary situations. By having Peter, Ray, Egon and Winston regular folk who are then thrust into the strange situation of dealing with a Sumerian God in the real-world setting of New York, Ghostbusters had a close-to-home atmosphere that a movie about space busters would have lacked. Without Ramis' writing and vision, who knows if Ghostbusters would have become the pop culture behemoth it is today. As Dan Palmer pointed out on the latest Flickering Myth Podcast, Dan Aykroyd is (and always will be) a great writer, but without a filter like Ramis he doesn't write Blues Brothers, he writes Blues Brothers 2000.

It's hard to put into words just how much Ramis and Ghostbusters changed my life. In the near 30 years of my existence I have spent the majority of my time watching the movie, playing with the toys from the spin-off cartoon, dressing up as a Ghostbuster for Halloween or a convention, going to public screenings, private screenings and interactive screenings or simply quoting it with friends until our sides hurt from laughter. Like many people of my generation, the news of Ramis' death has touched me deeply. It seems unfair to pin him down to just one role, but Egon Spengler was a huge part of a lot of people's childhood and he should be remembered for that, as well as all of his other great work. Harold Ramis' passing is akin to the death of John Lennon: we've lost our first Beatle. Only our Beatles didn't play music, they busted ghosts.

You've crossed the streams Egon, I just hope there are plenty of Twinkies, spore molds and fungus wherever you are. Thank you for everything.

Marvel's Kevin Feige debunks Doctor Strange director shortlist and Johnny Depp casting rumour, talks Guardians of the Galaxy
Last week, a report emerged suggesting that Marvel Studios had identified four potential directors for the long-awaited Doctor Strange movie in Mark Andrews (Brave), Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair), Dean Israelite (Welcome to Yesterday) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies), seemingly indicating that the Sorcerer Supreme is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as part of Phase Three. However, Marvel chief Kevin Feige has now dismissed the report during an interview with IGN, although he does admit that the studio is meeting with people about the movie:br />
"Well, that article was true that we're meeting a lot of people now. That article was not true about who we're meeting or what level anybody is. But we're actively looking. Of course, of course. We always look at a wide range of people with a wide range of backgrounds. There's only one criteria: do something that we think is really cool. [Laughs] That's about it."

Feige then went on to debunk the rumours about Johnny Depp being lined up for the role of Stephen Strange: "No, no. When you have a project that's been around as long as Doctor Strange, there is sometimes, 'Oh, I've met with Stan about this! Or I did that!' So Strange is one of those projects that predates me by a long shot. Obviously, the character does, but even in its cinematic brewing. So there's a lot of things that have happened before me, and I've been here 14 years. So that's a long time ago. I don't know if that happened then."

And finally, he also addressed the response to the first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, which caused quite a stir when it arrived online last week: " I was very pleased with it, because it's still early days for us, as the movie is coalescing and formulating itself in the cutting room, but there are a few things that we would be locked into: the cast, their looks, our use of music and our very unique tone. The fact that that's what that teaser is about and that's what people are embracing, there are a lot of happy people in the offices, that people are into this."

Kevin Conroy on voicing Batman for 23 years

Back in 1991, Kevin Conroy landed the role of The Dark Knight for the classic Batman: The Animated Series, and while Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and Christian Bale have all hung up the cape and cowl since, he's still lending his voice to the role of the Caped Crusader in Warner's DC Universe Animated Original Movies line, not to mention the hugely popular Arkham video games. During a recent interview (via CBM), Conroy has spoken about his time as Batman, during which he's established himself as the voice of Gotham's Dark Knight Detective:

"I had absolutely no expectation that this job would turn into what it became. I started recording it in 1991, and it went on the air on Fox in 1992 as a prime time series. Then over 23 years, it just evolved from Batman: The Animated Series to The Adventures of Batman and Robin to Justice League and then Batman Beyond. Since then, there’s been the direct-to-video movies and now the Arkham games. He’s such an iconic character. He’s such a part of the American cultural landscape. It’s an amazing thing to be a part of and to have contributed to. Like all actors, you never know where your career is going to go. You plan for things and you train for things, but you never really know the direction you’re going to go. So I had no idea that I was going to end up doing voice acting for animation and that I’d be voicing Batman. But it wound up working really well. The show is just a really good marriage of what I brought to the character and what Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Andrea Romano and all the people putting the series together were looking for."

Conroy will next be heard as The Dark Knight in the direct-to-video movie Batman: Assault on Arkham, which is due for release later this year.

The last few issues of Dredd have been addictive reading, each new comic leaving little breadcrumbs of hints sprinkled on top of a juicy cliff-hanger. Finally, all that we suspected, and hoped for, has happened, Judge Death has returned.

Arguably, Dredd’s biggest foe, the return of the Dark Judge is an exciting prospect and will no doubt have old fans flocking to read this latest story. Personally, I found this particular issue a little disjointed. The plot seems to leap and jump into the next phase without any flow, at times I found myself re-reading previous pages to make sure I hadn’t missed anything – I hadn’t. I found the use of Dredd’s character to be disappointing too. He seemed to give up too quickly, grasping at defeat and that made me disappointed in him, to see him used in an almost pathetic manner. The Judge Dredd we all know and love has a hell of a lot more fight him than this particular issue would imply.

Dredd’s foes in issue 16 are easily identifiable and have a nice variety of dislikeable traits. Judge Cal is the very embodiment of modern day sleazy, self-serving politicians, while Tarjay is ruthless, motivated and frightening. Both are very different characters but very easy to route against.

There’s a good level of gruesome art throughout Judge Dredd #16. In some recent Dredd issues I’ve felt like I was reading a young child’s comic rather than the style of art that more mature readers usually associate with Dredd. There’s some fantastic use of gore, graphic (and satisfying) and the lack of bolder colours gives Mega City One a nice oppressive and despondent feel. Going back to a previous point, I don’t think the layout of all the panels helped with the flow of the story, it was too easy to become lost and get ahead of where you needed to go.

Overall it was a good read, with a satisfying, if not hinted at too early, ending. But even known it was coming some readers will not help but do a mental fist pump, perhaps even a real one. Roll on the next issue!
